Milwaukee Public Museum
One
of the most prominent natural history and science museums in the
world is internationally recognized for its collections, ongoing
research and exhibits. It opened in 1884, the museum is home
to over 6 million artifacts and thought to be one of the best in the
nation. One of the first important exhibits opened is the
Streets of Old Milwaukee, in 1965, which shows the city as it was
long ago and is a marvelous representation that will mesmerize the
visitor. Presently, 17 permanent exhibits are shown which will
enthrall those entering this esteemed establishment. Africa
showcases 4 dioramas of the savanna and wildlife; a watering hole, a
bamboo forest and watering hole and a Masai lion hunt. Arctic
shows dioramas of the Arctic with natives, both animal and human.
Asia has a Japanese garden, collections of Chinese art, a market in
Old Delhi, India and displays from Myanmar, Tibet and Thailand.
Bugs alive, has live bugs of thirteen different species of
millipede, insect, centipede, crustacean and arachnid from
Madagascar, Australia, Africa and Central America. European
Village recreates shops and houses of 33 European cultures as they
looked in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Exploring Life on
Earth gives the visitor the various environments, processes of life
of the past and the present with labs and collections examined by
the museums scientists. Pacific Islands display exhibits from
the Easter Islands, Papua New Guinea and Samoa. Rain Forest
showcases the ecosystem of a tropical rainforest where visitors can
walk through. Pre-Columbian Americas show the origin of the
Native Americans and cultures of Mesoamerican civilizations of the
Incas, Mayans, Olmecs, Aztecs and other Central Andean natives.
The Third Planet show the plate tectonics and how the state would
have looked like during the many ages long ago where dinosaurs and
other creatures roamed the earth. Many species of these
animals are displayed in life sized exhibits. A sense of
Wonder holds over a thousand specimens of various items including
the skeleton of a humpback whale. South and Middle American
holds a diorama of a Guatemalan marketplace, Mayan lowlands and the
Andes. Temples, Tells and Tombs contain the many artifacts of
the near east, such as Assyria, Crete, Cyprus, Egypt and Persian
plus ancient Greece and Rome. It is the only exhibit of its
kind in the world.
