Historical Charlestown, South Carolina
Does it not seem like it was a lifetime ago that you and your family last went on a vacation? Well, the time has come again to get out in the world and take another exciting vacation, and this time around you and your family are taking a trip to historical Charlestown, South Carolina. When my wife and I paid a visit to Charlestown, we had to make a decision on how we would like to get around the town to see everything that Charlestown had to offer, and of course the best way to do this is in a rental vehicle. So, we packed up the rental car and headed out on our own to see the beautiful, historic city.
The first thing that I, I mean we, decided to do was to pay a visit to Charlestown’s Pirates and Buccaneers. I am a huge fan of the Age of Sailing and of course the life and the times of pirates and buccaneers, so this was a must see for me. I mean there is no way that I could have missed out on this while staying in such a historical city. Anyhow, this was one of the most interesting places that I visited while we were here in Charlestown. The tour guide was absolutely amazing with the facts he provided on this tour. Not only did occupants of old Charlestown fight off the Spanish, the French and the Native Americans, but they also had to try to defend themselves from the terror of the high seas, pirates!
Charlestown was a haven for pirates and buccaneers because it was a very fine port. In fact, Charlestown was the port where the infamous pirate Blackbeard blockaded the city, attacking any ship that tried to come in and out of the port and taking prisoners. He exchanged the captives for expensive medicines the he and his crew could use to treat the diseases that ran across his ships. It was not far from Charlestown (it was actually Ocracoke Inlet) that Blackbeard made his final stand against Lieutenant Maynard of the Royal Navy. Maynard won the battle and took off Blackbeard’s head and hung it from the rigging of his ship to show his victory to other pirates. It has been reported that it took five bullet wound and twenty saber wounds to finally bring the big captain down, making him a legend long after his death.
The next place that my wife and I decided to visit was the Spirit of Carolina Cruise Dinner. This was a wonderful dining experience that my wife and I shared. We departed from Patriot’s Point and cruised around the Charlestown Harbor for three hours, all while enjoying a most delicious dinner. The ship also provided live music entertainment to accompany our three-course meal. We followed our meal up with a bit of romantic dancing and then we headed upstairs to one of the yacht’s three observation decks. The views of the harbor and the surrounding land were breathtaking. We had such a great time on this mini dinner cruise.
We were able to do these things on our time because we had our rental car. We didn’t have to hurry because of a public transportation schedule and we didn’t have the hassle of trying to hail a taxi cab to get us were we wanted to go. That is the beauty of renting a vehicle when you are visiting a great city like Charlestown, South Carolina.
