New Orleans
We decided to go up New Orleans, mostly because the heat from the hurricanes had calmed down and we were interested to see what exactly had happened to the area and what they had done to clean it up. However our main priority was to get some of that amazing New Orleans sea food on one of their sea-side diners. Well, not really sea-side but on the Lake Pontchaitrain, which is best described as a harbor.
Now if anyone has read our previous blogs you know that our tradition is to rent a car on every trip, it’s always a fun thing for us to do. Pick a car that we enjoy and go, however we recently became fans of hybrid cars, but this trip we were told by some friends that the Sebring was a fun convertible, and so when we arrived at Hertz and saw it on the lot we asked. Of course we have never had trouble with car rentals as everyone else swears they have and we in and out in twenty minutes in our temporary Sebring. Wow did this thing book, traveling down the highways at 65M.P.H. our hair blowing in the wind was such a cool experience, and the top was so easy to put up and down. Not a ton of trunk space but a large backseat and even a new HD radio was in the car. We listened to comedians and old times 70s music on the way up, it was fantastic. When we arrived in New Orleans we went straight for the restaurant, and found Jacques-Imo's Café a nice little restaurant with friendly service. The food was great in this surreal and small business, and I really mean great, the drinks were nice and the atmosphere perfect. The best part was the corn bread that we were given prior to the meal, its one of those appetizers to die for, I’m not joking, I could go all the way back to New Orleans just for a piece of that tasty bread.
We went to and from the next day after spending a night in a hotel, we really didn’t intend to spend a lot of time here just one or two days. Anyhow we asked around and found where some of the hurricane damage had been restored and most of the locals just wanted to talk about how bad it was and their losses. So we went to find some of the dams and systems they had constructed to relieve the area of the previous floods, they intend to leave them there just in case this happens again. They had created dams and ditches and a variety of pumps and system to carry the water out of the inner city towards the lake, it was truly impressive. We traveled to some of the areas hit by tornados and found the few areas that were still underwater, we must of spent seven hours in our Sebring.
The next day we visited a church that was carried out on a vacant lot where the church used to be, that was an interesting site, the people were still content. Then when this was over we went back to the hotel, checked out and venture back towards home in our Sebring. All in all this was a fun way to spend 3 and a half days and relatively cheap. And the Sebring was a fun way to spice it up, it was fantastic, and after writing this, I want more corn bread!
