Deep Sea Fishing

Big TunaSo we got back home late last night with our Chevrolet Cobalt from Hertz and decided we wanted to keep it for an extra day, and then return it to the airport tomorrow. We always liked driving so we came down from New York via our rental car, snapped a lot of photos on the way and stopped at a few restaurants we had read about online. Now that we were back in Florida we just wanted to relax. However after a long time listening to the many messages on the answering machine I was devastated when I heard one message.

Unfortunately before leaving I had totally forgotten to check the calendar for the days preceding our return. Remember we went to Long Island for a few days? That was all unplanned and now we missed the biggest event of my year! We had chartered a deep-sea fishing boat, and the message simply stated that we had missed our boat, and to call about our money being returned.

When we called they told us that we there were two options; have our money returned or take the next available boat which happened to be the next morning. We wanted to rest but I convinced my wife that resting on a boat is better than on the couch to Nascar, so we took the boat the next day and we were on the water by 5am. Since we still had the Cobalt we took it. You have to get out of the channel as early in the day as possible, you spend two hours just getting out to “deep-sea,” so wasting your chartered boat hours on the trip is unnecessary. Besides we pretty much slept on the boat for those two hours, they had comfortable benches.

Our captain was a smart guy and about 7am he and I were going over all his instruments before he pointed out we were very close to his favorite fishing spot. Now I brought my own rod and he just laughed and told me to leave it, which was later understood when we caught ourselves a massive Tuna. I can’t remember how much it weighed but I couldn’t pick it up alone. Interestingly enough I must have fought this guy for thirty minutes, at one point I even handed the rod to our captain and took a three minute breather. We plan to eat this sucker tonight, and I definitely want to go out again. One of the guys on the boat with us caught two medium sized Kingfish and my wife got to real in a very small Barracuda, but she wouldn’t touch it.

If you get the opportunity you should really go fishing out on the ocean its great fun. It really isn’t as expensive as you would think and it’s worth every single cent you spend on it. I wonder if we got enough of the fish smell out of the trunk to the Cobalt, if not the next renter is in for a surprise.
