Jacksonville - Florida's Biggest City
Centered on the St. John's River, Jacksonville is the most populated city in the
state, 25 miles south of the Georgia border and 340 north of Miami. The city has
the biggest urban park system in the country, with services and facilities at over
337 locales sitting on over 80,000 acres with a plethora of natural beauty, places
to go and things to do. The area around St. John's River and the Atlantic Ocean
helps the city and its residents with all of the above, where you can surf, swim,
water-ski, boat, fish, sail and jet ski, just for starters; with plenty of trails,
preserves and parks. Hemming Plaza is the oldest park, which means it was the first
and is found downtown, hidden by the many tall government buildings that take care
of business for the state, county and city. The Jacksonville-Baldwin Rail Trail is
a linear city park which goes over 14 miles and the sights along its paths are just
marvelous. There is no end to the cultural arts here, with numerous theaters and
groups, performing arts, dinner theaters and arenas. Quite a few films have been
shot here, including; The Year of Getting to Know Us, Brenda Starr, Creature from
the Black Lagoon, Forces of Nature, Monster House, Tigerland, Sunshine State, the
Manchurian Candidate, Why do Fools fall in Love, Basic and Lonely Hearts. One of the
most popular running races is held here, beginning in 1994, and called the Gate River
Run, the biggest 15K race in the United States. Another sports event is the Amelia
Island Concours d'Elegance, which is held in March, and one of the country's major
automotive concours events. The Blessing of the Fleet is held here in March, as well
as the Great Atlantic Seafood and Music Festival. The Jazz Festival is held every April
and also that month, the Springing the Blues festival is held, which is free and outdoors.
The last Saturday in April brings on the Tree Hill Nature Center Annual Butterfly
Festival and has brought families from all over the state and region. Because of the
fantastic weather here, there are more butterfly gardens and butterflies than any other
part of the country.

Jacksonville Alternative Attractions
Jacksonville has some wonderful alternative attractions that
normally aren't talked about but are just as interesting as their other more
popular attractions. Many people coming to the city aren't as interested in
the amusement parks, water ride parks and the like, but are interested in
seeing some of the gardens, museums, theaters and symphony houses that
thrive in this city. In the city's center, the Jacksonville Landing and the
Jacksonville Riverwalks are marvelous places to casually stroll along at
your own pace, enjoying the weather, your company, the sights and sounds, and
most importantly, your time together. The Landing is becoming a very popular
place to enjoy riverfront dining and shopping, and taking one of the river taxis
to get there from the riverwalk is just fabulous. The Northbank riverwalk is 2
miles long
and goes from Berkman Plaza to I-95 at the Fuller Warren Bridge. The
Southbank riverwalk is 1.2 miles and leaves by the Radisson Hotel and heads to
Museum Circle. When you come to the circle, St. John's Park or Friendship Park
is where you will find Friendship Fountain, that was built in 1965 and billed as
world's highest and biggest fountain. East of that is the Maritime Museum, that
is on the riverwalk, but enclosed and just a magnificent museum to visit. In
downtown Jacksonville, the Museum of Modern Art has a wonderful 60,000 square foot
building where the main exhibits changes quarterly. Then there is JMOMA or now called
the Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville, the Museum of Science and History on the
Southbank Riverwalk, and the Alexander Brest Museum and Gallery that sits on the campus
of the Jacksonville University. The Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens has a marvelous
collection which includes an exquisite collection of Meissen porcelain. The LaVilla
Museum opened in 1999 and features African-American works of history and there are
numerous buildings that are architecturally beautiful and historically listed, and
the Jacksonville Zoo and Garden is another fine venue to visit and enjoy with your
family or that special someone.
