Things to do in Key West

Ernest Hemingway Home Ernest Hemingway Home Key West, Florida
The Ernest Hemingway House is officially known as the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum, and located on Whitehead Street in Key West, Florida and had been the residence of world renown writer Ernest Hemingway and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1968. This was Hemingway's residence from 1931 to 1939, and is now a private for profit landmark and tourist attraction that is populated by six and seven-toed cats that the tour guides claim are the direct descendants of his cats. Hemingway's second son, Patrick, that lived in the house, said in a 1994 interview in the Miami Herald's Tropic that his father had kept peacocks in Key West, but not cats; although he owned cats in Cuba. In an interview with Hemingway's widow, Mary, in 1972, the LA Times stated that Mary denounced the sale of the cats by owners of the house as an "outright lie". It is rank exploitation of Hemingway's name, and so, the house doesn't sell cats, but does continue its selective breeding program of the six and seven-toed cats. In this house, Hemingway would do his best work, that included the last draft to "A Farewell to Arms" and the short story classics, the Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber and the Snows of Kilimanjaro. Although the house is the second highest spot on the island, it is still only 16 feet above sea level. It had been constructed by Asa Tift, a marine architect and salvage wrecker, in 1851, in the colonial southern mansion style that was built from limestone that was quarried from the site. It is a great testament to the folks that built it and its unique location since it has continued to survive numerous hurricanes and the deep basement is still dry. The Hemingways had been living in Key West since 1930, but always they had rented their houses. It was Pauline Hemingway, the author's second wife, who found the Tift house in 1931 for sale at a tax auction, and her uncle Gus purchased it for the couple for $8000 cash and then gave it to them as a wedding gift. It was one of the first houses on the island to be installed with indoor plumbing, as well as being the first to have an upstairs bathroom with running water that was fed from a roof rain cistern. Other features include a built-in fireplace, the first swimming pool in the city, and the only pool in a hundred miles during the late 1930s. Pauline had to spend $20,000 to have the deep well-fed pool constructed for her husband, while he was away as a Spanish Civil War correspondent in 1938.

Key West Shipwreck MuseumKey West Shipwreck Museum Key West, Florida
At this unique museum in Key West, Florida, you'll wander back in time to learn more about the city's outstanding maritime history and how it would become the richest city in America, and as it combines films, actual relics recovered from the 1985 rediscovery of the wrecked vessel Isaac Allerton that sank in 1856 off the treacherous Florida Keys reef and actors. Master wrecker, Asa Tift and his wrecking crew will tell you about the story of how this unique industry would provide the livelihoods of the early pioneers of the city, and climb a 65 foot lookout tower to be on alert for shipwrecks. During the golden age of sailing ships, more than one hundred of them would pass by the island in a single day, even though the area was known as one of the most treacherous regions in the world, with an average of one ship wrecking along the Florida reef every week. The wreckers would keep a keen eye on the reefs both day and night from their observation towers, as well as patrolling the reefs in their own vessels, looking for wrecks. And when one was found, the cry of "Wreck Ashore" could be heard for many distances as it was echoed by the watchmen as they raced to the docks to join the race to the reefs and wreck. The first man to reach the wreck would become the wrecking master, who would then control the salvage operation and get a bigger share of the prize. The goods would be sold and the wreckers would get anywhere from 25% to 50% of the profit to the wreckers.

Harry S. Truman Little White House Harry S. Truman Little White House Key West, Florida
The Harry S. Truman Little White House is situated in Key West, Florida and had been the winter White House for the President of the United States, Harry S. Truman, for 175 days that were done during 11 visits here. It sits in the Truman Annex neighborhood of Old Town, Key West, originally constructed on the waterfront in 1890 as a duplex, with Quarters A for the commandant and Quarters B for the paymaster. The cottage would be converted to a single family in 1911, as a residence for the commanding officer, with more land provided in front of it so that eventually it would have another building constructed in front of it and thus cause the cottage to lose its views of the ocean. In December 1912, the first president to visit the house would be William Howard Taft, coming here by Flagler's Overseas Railroad and then would sail to Panama to look over the canal that was being built. In WWI, Thomas Edison would live there while he gave his service to the nation, perfecting some 41 weapons during that impressive six month visit. The house would still be part of the command headquarters during WWII. President Truman would just finish 19 months in office without a break and his doctors told him to take a warm vacation, so in 1946, Truman arrived here, and when he left, he promised to return whenever he needed to rest and relax. The second visit was in November of 1947, and began a pattern that would see Truman come here every November-December and February to March, with the advent of modern technology, he would be able to communicate with the world and bring key staff to the island for any meetings since it was only three hours flight from Washington. After Harry had left the presidential office, he would still come here and visit, often staying at some of the other locations on the small island. It would be continually used by various presidents and officials for numerous reasons and is still used for various purposes. It was added to the National Register of Historical Places in 1974.

Key West Museum of Art & HistoryKey West Museum of Art & History Key West, Florida
The Old Post Office and Customs House in Key West, Florida is now a historic site that was added to the National Register of Historical Places in 1973, becoming the Key West Museum of Art and History and operated by the Key West Art and Historical Society. Its outstanding exhibits include the local history, works by local artists, famous people like Ernest Hemingway and maritime history. The structure was designed by William Kerr and finished in 1891; with the building being used as a district court until 1932, when it would be transferred to the US Navy. After that, the structure would become empty and be boarded up to discourage vandalism, but after a nine year, $9 million renovation, the marvelous red brick structure would be returned to its former excellent condition. Other exhibits include; folk artist Mario Sanchez's colorful wood paintings of old Key West, an outstanding exhibit about Hemingway and his life on the island, where he would pen many of his most famous works, and look at his bloodstained WWI uniform and other personal items that would help create his legendary image of writer and adventurer. There is a short video about Fishing, Friends and Family of Ernest, and so much more about this vibrant historical city that sits on the last landscape of the United States.

Key West Lighthouse MuseumKey West Lighthouse Museum Key West, Florida
The Key West Lighthouse and Keeper's Quarters Museum has been preserving the history of this southernmost lighthouse of the nation, occupying a building that was constructed in 1847 to aid ships in navigating the dangerous reefs that lie off the lower Keys, the lighthouse is now a lone sentinel standing guard over one of the state's best historical sites. The tower had originally been constructed 46 high and powered by 15 oil lamps with 15 inch reflectors, and in 1894, it would be raised up to 86 feet. Visitors climb the 88 iron steps to an observation deck that provides beautiful panoramic views. The tower and quarters have been completely rejuvenated to its best condition and maintained as it had before being deactivated in 1969. There are a lot of historical elements preserved there, including the pipes that were used to deliver the acetylene gas that had powered the light before it was converted into electricity in 1927. The clapboard cottage that housed the keepers and their families lived while taking care of the beacon, has been restored to a turn-of-the-century style home with vintage furniture and furnishings, and photos that offer a sense of the lifestyle in Key West during that period. The lighthouse would be constructed after the hurricane of 1846 destroyed the original 1825 tower, and today, it is the 15th oldest surviving lighthouse in the nation. In 1886, the original keeper's house would be torn down and replaced with the current structure, but after being deactivated, it would be acquired by Monroe County, and in 1972, leased to the Key West Art and Historical Society that added safety features and opened it as a museum in 1989. The keeper's quarters were renovated in 1990 and converted into a museum, and nominated to be listed on the NRHP in 1998.

Oldest House and Garden MuseumOldest House and Garden Museum Key West, Florida
The Oldest House in Key West, Florida was constructed by Richard Cussans, who arrived here from Nassau in 1806 and arrived in Key West in 1828. Cussans was a builder and merchant, constructing a one story home on Whitehead Street in 1829 and believed to have been moved to its current site in 1836. For many years, it would be the home of Captain Francis Watlington and his wife Emeline, with their nine daughters, who was considered a sea captain that was involved in the booming salvage industry in the keys and the maritime enterprises of the time. Watlington began serving as a state senator in 1859, then joining the Confederate navy in 1861, and returning after it was finished; passing away in 1883, after Emeline passed on in 1881. Lily Watlington, the couples' youngest daughter, would never marry but live in the house until she passed on in 1936. The last person from the family, one Earl Johnson, would live there until 1972, when he passed on, and a Mrs. Robert Austin would buy it in 1974, and then deeded it to the preservation board so it could be preserved and protected. The house has survived fires, occupation by Union troops, hurricanes, economic hard times and good times, and is now a physical chronicle of the history of the city, island and people from its earliest days to the current time. It contains numerous family portraits, original furnishings, period pieces, ship models and documents that pertain to the activities of the wreckers, and in the rear is a lovely spacious garden with enticing benches that encourage you to sit and smell the flowers, as well as the last surviving cook house in south Florida still in existence.
