Key West

Key West is the southern most island in Florida, and you can even find the very end of US Route 1 going off the end of the pier on its southern most tip. The city lies 129 miles southwest of Miami and 106 miles north-northeast of Cuba and has been a seaport destination for many cruise ships; with the Key West International Airport bringing in the visitors from afar to cruise the city blocks around and around and around. After traveling around the small island city, find a comfortable seat, at one of the many famous bars, and you can see the cars traveling around the city, time after time. It really becomes somewhat of a parade, as you begin to notice familiar vehicles and the people in them. There are plenty of hotels and guest houses, as well as some bed and breakfast places for you to stay at, but no parking overnight is allowed along the beaches or streets. The beaches here aren't as nice as those up either side of the coast, but most people aren't coming here for the chance to swim in the ocean. The sights and sounds of the city, the many antique and souvenir shops will keep you plenty busy. There are some places that have unimaginable treasures set out in glass cases for you to peruse and enjoy, and the atmosphere is always one of margaritaville and Jimmy Buffett songs. Two famous writers have lived here; Tennessee Williams and Ernest Hemingway, and you will see those places in your visits.  The island has been called the "Conch Republic" and it is a great story for those warm evenings when you come down here. The island itself is rich in history and culture, since it sits on the southern most part of the United States and did have a great relationship with Cuba before the revolution. In fact, Pan American Airlines was started in Key West to shuttle people back and forth between the two islands and many famous politicians, as well as artists have come here for inspiration and the friendly atmosphere that permeates the air. It is a marvelous place to visit and will be most enjoyable for all.

 Old Town Key West
The western part of the island has been called "Old Town" because most of the historical properties lie there, and includes the Truman Annex, Mallory Square, Fort Zachary Taylor and Duval Street; with their fabulous bungalows and guest mansions. The buildings were built anywhere from 1886 to 1912, and are atypical for the region with wood frame homes that are one to two and a half stories sitting on concrete foundation piers that are at least 3 feet above the ground. The roofs are metal and peaked wood siding, gingerbread trim and wood lattice screens that cover the ugly look of the piers. Since the 1940s the island has doubled in size due to landfill, and the newer area on the east side is often referred to as "new town", where the shopping centers, malls, ball parks, schools, residential neighborhoods and the Key West International Airport is located.  Key West and the other keys sit on the dividing line of the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, with different currents and the calmer, warmer waters of the gulf usually seen with large clumps of seagrass.  These two great bodies of water join just below the Keys and are called the Straits of Florida.  One of the biggest attractions here, believe it or not is the concrete buoy that sits at the corner of South and Whitehead Streets,Key West Sunset Florida claiming to be the southern most point of the United States; but that distinction belongs to land on the Truman Annex, which is not open to the public. The city is the only one in the lower United States to never had a frost, with the average yearly lows reaching only in the 60s. The winter season, or November through April brings about a quarter of the yearly rains, with the remainder coming during the summer months, which are usually from April until late October. Probably the worst weather that the island gets is the hurricane, with 85 tropical cyclones coming within 60 miles of the island in the last 158 years, and only 37 of those being of hurricane strength. The best way to see the island and all of its wonderful cultural and historical places is to rent a bike and cruise, like the cars, with walking being fine, but hot and humid in the summer months, and the usual afternoon showers. Sunsets are nothing short of spectacular here, and the entire city seems to hold its breath for a moment as that bright orange ball slowly goes down in the western horizon.
