Things to do in Little Rock

  • Arkansas Museum of Discovery Museum of Discovery Little Rock, Arkansas
The Museum of Discovery: Arkansas Museum of Science & History is found in downtown Little Rock, Arkansas, and is in a historic structure in the River Market District; near the Arkansas River. The Clinton Presidential Center is close by and would be the perfect complement to this museum trip. Profuse writer and alcohol temperate, Bernie Babcock started the museum in 1927, and called it the Arkansas Museum of Natural History and Antiquities; because of an article written by H. L. Mencken saying that people from Arkansas were country bumpkins that had no worthy cultural centers. Ms. Babcock opened the museum in a storefront downtown on Main Street, with numerous notorious displays that included the King Crowley, known to be the biggest archaeological phony in Arkansas history, and the head of a Chicago crime boss. She had taxidermy items from other collections, multicultural dolls and primitive art. Wanting to keep the museum continuing, she gave it to the city in 1929; whereupon it was moved to the city hall. In the year 1942, the tower structure of the Little Rock Arsenal was going to be refurbished by the Aesthetic Club, the WPA, and the assistance of local philanthropist Frederick W. Allsop. Later, the building became the new home of the museum and it stayed here for the following 55 years. The museum's collections grew with more displays and better artifacts. Three museums received a mold of the Arkansas Friday fossil, the Arkansas dinosaur and a statue of the fossil, and this was one of them. In 1964, the name was changed to the Arkansas Museum of Science and Natural History, and then to the Arkansas Museum of Science and History in 1983. The professionalism of the staff and the quality of the collections brought the museum its accreditation in 1993, and in 1997 the name was changed for the last time to the name it now holds. In 2003, it was joined by the Children's Museum of Arkansas that had been centered in the Union Station; and then it was given a 9.2 million dollar grant to enlarge its premises and make any necessary renovations. Three interactive exhibits would be added and an entrance from Clinton Avenue, with the museum needing to get another $3.5 million in matching money. Numerous displays that are interactive are found in the technology, science and history galleries; with permanent exhibits that are called Worlds of the Forest, Arkansas Indians, Bug Zoo, Room to Grow, Passports to the World, Energy!, Imagination Station and Health Hall. Other collections include Kewpie dolls, Friendship doll, small live animals and multicultural masks.  The museum is a fantastic bargain on the second Sunday of every month between the hours of 1 and 5 PM since it is free.

  • Little Rock Zoo
The lone zoo in the state of Arkansas is the Little Rock Zoo, that was started in 1926, and currently has more than 725 animals from over 200 species. One of the newest critters is the naked mole-rat and a completely renovated antique carousel; with an African penguin display coming in the summer of 2009. The zoo has a wonderful history of giving the local residents a quality environment that stresses the importance of wildlife conservation by natural animal exhibits and continuing educational programs. Offering a hands-on experience where fun is just as important as education, the zoo is one of the state's most visited destinations and a driving enigma is the local economy. The zoo opened with only two animals; a circus trained bear and abandoned timber wolf, and today's animals include many endangered species. Its original buildings were built by the WPA, of local wood and stone, that are home to the big cats, reptiles, primates and birds. The big cat house has been refurbished into a place called the Cafe Africa with a unique African type village lodge. The zoo is dedicated to preserving these magnificent early buildings, and visitors will most likely view various restorations happening in the future. In the 1980s, the zoo built a bigger cat exhibit, as well as ones for the river otters, alligators, crocodiles, sloth bears and great apes; one of a handful of ape habitats in the world that house all three species of great apes; gorillas, chimpanzees and orangutans. During the 1990s, when so many attractions were offering ghostly adventures, the zoo started its yearly Boo that has become the biggest in the state. The Metropolitan National Bank made a very generous donation so that now the zoo has two female lions in its African lion display, with Lemur Island opening, as well as a Civitan Pavilion for special gatherings and the Civitan amphitheater for educational programs.

  • Big Dam BridgeBig Dam Bridge Little Rock, Arkansas
The Big Dam Bridge, or the Pulaski County Pedestrian and Bicycle Bridge as it is formally known is the biggest bicycle and pedestrian only bridge in the continent and has never had cars or trucks on it. It goes across the Arkansas River as it flows between Little Rock and North Little Rock; in an area over the Murray Lock and dam. It is almost a mile in length, 14 feet wide and 65 feet over the river itself. Its nickname came about because of a comment made by local judge of Pulaski County, F. G. "Buddy" Villines; when considering the funding necessary to build the bridge; had said " we're going to build that dam bridge" meaning the bridge that would go over the lock and dam and not an expletive. The cost was almost $13 million, and it opened September 30th, 2006. Hoping that it would help the economic base, and the local residents with a healthy alternative, it has come to be used for numerous races that include the BDB Duathlon, BDB Twilight 5K race and Big Dam Bridge 100 cycling tour. It has turned out to be an exciting place for walkers, runners, joggers and bicyclists; and hopes for more national attention and races are high.

  • Old State House MuseumOld State House Museum Little Rock, Arkansas
The old state house building in Little Rock, Arkansas is the oldest surviving state's capitol that sits west of the Mississippi River and was the venue of Bill Clinton's celebration the night he became the 42nd President of the United States. Ordered to be constructed by Territorial governor John Pope, it was done between 1833 and 1842, by Gideon Shryock, who had done the Kentucky state capitol building and on this one used the Greek Revival architectural style. The first plans were just too much money for the new state, so Gideon's assistant George Weigart made some changes and headed the construction. Both houses of the state assembly were able to move in before it was completely finished, and in the year 1837, a knife fight broke out in the House of Representatives that was fatal. In the Civil War, the Union had troops stationed there and in Little Rock. In the reconstruction period, the structure was again a focus during the Brooks-Baxter War, as it became a fortified building during that outrageous struggle. It all began when the Republican party became split over the ratification of the Arkansas constitution that stated ex-confederates would not have the right to take part in the new government. Because many carpetbaggers had come to the state, and the local scalawags joined together, forcing the party to split with one group, the Minstrels, and mostly non Arkansasans; and the Brindle Tails who were from the state. The democrats said they wouldn't take part in a government that would dis-enfranchise the confederates, who were mostly democrats also; which would allow the republicans to gain control of the state's politics, which they did anyway. After great amounts of money and fraud had corrupted many of the politicians, a group was able to impeach the governor, a carpetbagger Republican named Powell Clayton. The violence started during the 1872 Gubernatorial elections between the Minstrels, who had won the election with Elisha Baxter, and the Brindle Tails loser, Joseph Brooks. Both sides had hundreds of militia men and it went on for three months until President Ulysses S. Grant had to get involved, reluctantly, and he made Baxter the new governor. In 1874, the new constitution was ratified, two full years before the rest of the nation; which effectively ended the period called Reconstruction.

  • Arkansas Arts Center
This wonderful arts center in Little Rock, Arkansas, is home to the children's theater, Best Impressions Restaurant, museum, museum school, museum gift shop and the administrative offices. This is free to the public, except where special exhibitions are being held. The center opened in 1960, with the idea of teaching, inspiring and giving creative expression in the arts to all people in the state; while creating, saving and showing a wonderful permanent collection, with occasional visiting collections throughout the year. The first ideas were generated in 1914, when the Fine Arts Club of Arkansas was began, with many supporters and volunteers that were eventually involved in the formation of the Museum of Fine Arts in 1937. In 1959, Winthrop Rockefeller and his wife, Jeanette, started a state crusade to create a fantastic art center that the state and the city could be proud of. In 1960, when the museum was started by city ordinance, it was renamed the Arkansas Arts Center and within three years had be increased to include another 5 galleries, 4 studio rooms, 381 seat theater, an art library and sculpted courtyards. It could hold temporary art displays, a school of fine and creative arts, and a community theater. The only items that were procured were local paintings and some prints by renown artists. In 1968, Townsend Wolfe was made the director while local funding dried up. The board of trustees decided to make some changes to the mission of the museum center, and a statewide program started; and the board members decided to concentrate their efforts on paper works that were uncommon and a children's theater. In 1972, the board became a 501 organization that would own the endowment and collection and not the city. In 1982, a new gallery was built with 3200 square feet called the Rockefeller; on top of the already renovated school studios, prep areas and storage for the collections. In 1985, a wonderful endowment was given to the museum, so that a new Decorative arts museum was opened and was soon the location of a quickly growing collection of crafts. Another gallery, called the Strauss Gallery was added to the left of the Rockefeller gallery with an additional 1300 square feet of space. In 1998, they had ground breaking ceremonies for the newest additions, a 30,000 square feet of space and 12,000 square feet of space already filled. In 2003, the Decorative arts museum was closed with all the crafts being moved to the arts center.

  • Clinton Presidential Library Clinton Presidential Library Little Rock, Arkansas
The William J. Clinton Presidential Center and Park contains the presidential library, offices of the Clinton Foundation and the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service; all started by Bill Clinton, the 42nd President of the United States. This city park was recently completed with the facilities designed by architect James Polshek and museum designer firm Ralph Appelbaum Associates. The main building is second in size to the Ronald Reagan Library; which is the biggest one, with the Clinton library holding more archives that house over 2 million photos, 21 email messages, 80,000 artifacts from the Clinton presidency and 80 million pages of documents. The museum contains many items from Clinton's term and has full scale copies of the Oval Office and Cabinet Room. The park is a shining example of urban renewal constructed on abandoned railroad tracks of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroads. The Clinton School of Public Service is located in an old passenger train terminal; a railroad bridge spanning the Arkansas River going to North Little Rock is in the slow process of becoming a pedestrian bridge; with many delays since beginning it. The library contains many aspects of an environmentally type of design, and it has been awarded a LEED platinum rating by the US Green Building Council. The overall cost was 165 million dollars, and covers over 150,000 square feet in the 28 acre park; opening November 18, 2004. Other presidents that came to the inauguration were both George Bushes, Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter. Besides the archival displays, the center includes many wonderful exhibits, educational programs and special events.

  • Little Rock Geological Formation
This formation of rock outcropping is located on the Arkansas River, and became an important navigational landmark to Native Americans and European explorers that followed. The city of Little Rock, Arkansas is nearby, but this early cropping was often called the Point of Rocks since it is the first "rock" on the Arkansas River after leaving the huge Mississippi River. Here the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains fall onto the plateau that rises above the floodplains and is made of sandstone that was dropped here over 300 million years ago. Jean-Baptiste Benard de la Harpe was one of the first European explorers in the area, and he noted the change in the geological ground near the edge of the water in the year 1722. He spoke about the rocks that were sticking up out of the ground, but failed to note any significance so didn't name it. He was more interested in the "le Rocher Francais" or bluff of mountainous rock that was further up the river and is now called Big Rock. The smaller rocks became known as "le petite Rocher" in 1799, when it was shown on a map and during the 1950s became popular and known as la petite Roche.

  • Villa MarreVilla Marre Little Rock, Arkansas
This beautiful mansion was built in 1881, by Jennie and Angelo Marre in Little Rock, Arkansas, which, 125 years later became the facade of the very popular CBS television show, Designing Women. It has gone through many terrible storms, urban renewal, architectural renovations and neglect; and is still one of the most outstanding landmarks in the city. After becoming wealthy in the alcohol import and saloon business, Angelo started building his dream house, a stately reminder of his Italian heritage; since he came to this country in 1854, from Borzonaca, Italy, when he was just 12 years old. It is built in the second Empire architectural style with Italianate influences, with a special Mansard roof that has incorporated multi-colored rectangular slates entwined in a fish scale design. It showcases its Italian influences with tall narrow windows and a tower centered on the front. Quoins of concrete stones accentuate the corners of the house, that are alternated and reflective of the Italianate and second Empire styles. The magnificent interior amenities include a walnut staircase, extravagant woodwork, mural and frescoed ceilings. It took over a year to build and cost $5000. Angelo died in 1889, and then his wife in 1904, whereupon the house was sold to various owners which turned it into a nursing home, dance studio, rental property and an AA meeting place. It was condemned in 1964, but before it could be raised, the owner, Mary Morris sold it to James W. Strawn, Jr. for $11,550 on the 29th of January, 1964. James was the proprietor of a thriving furniture store and while he watched the numerous older homes of the city be destroyed, he decided to renovate the house. James spent two years refurbishing the home, and called it Villa Marre, after the home's builders, and when finished, wanted to make sure that it would remain an example of the wonderful architecture of the 19th century. The Quapaw Quarter Association was the perfect vessel, and it was happy to take over the responsibility of such a fine home. Since it was a great house with a wonderful history, it was put on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. The Scott Street area was an upscale street to live on at one time, but after the second world war, became run down. It has been recovering lately, and the Villa Marre became a private residence once more in 2002 and the furnishings were sold at auction.

  • North Little Rock's Old Mill (Pugh's Old Mill)Old Mill North Little Rock, Arkansas
Just on the other side of the river, in North Little Rock, in the Lakewood area of the Lakeshore Drive, the old mill is free to visitors, and the place of many great outdoor adventures. It is known as Pugh's Old Mill, and it was seen in the opening scene of the great movie, "Gone with the Wind". It isn't that old, since it was constructed in 1933, when a man named Justin Matthews wanted a copy of an old grist mill built along the Arkansas River and having it constructed so that it looked like it was from the 19th century. Wanting it to look like it had been built in the late 1800s, but having been through much to make it look like it should in the 1930s. The area is complete with tree stumps, toadstools and other sculptures, including a tree branch entwined bridge that is connected to the mill and the remainder of the park. A sculptor and artist of Mexico City, Dionico Rodriquez, created all the amazing detailed work that looks like it was made of wood, iron or stone, as well as the foot bridges and rustic seating. In 1991, his work was refurbished by the great nephew of that artisan, Carlos Cortes. It was put on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. The construction was of tinted concrete applied to steel and copper foundations that actually looks like iron, wood and stone. Rodriquez didn't speak any English, and kept his work very secretive, not wanting anyone to be able to copy his unique plaster techniques, which he called "el trabajo rustico" or rustic work.

  • Cossatot River State Park Natural AreaCossatot River Park Little Rock, Arkansas
The Cossatot River State Park Natural Area is 5,383 acres of pristine beauty in Howard County, Arkansas, and sits along 12 miles of the Cossatot River which has some of the best whitewater rafting in the entire mid-west, with class III, IV and treacherous class V rapids and it is the most challenging of the float rivers in the center of the United States. It is a favorite of playboaters, canoeists and kayakers, the more skilled ones that is, since this is such a tough river to float down. It edges on the Ouachita National Forest, and is really a tough rocky canyon with old hardwoods and juniper glades. It was made a National Wild and Scenic River by the Congress, with tent sites at the falls area and the sandbar area. Most of the land was acquired by the Weyerhaeuser Corporation and given to the park for recreational endeavors. Most of the time, the water isn't too bad, until a heavy rain brings in more water to raise the river's level and the paddlers start arriving to get the best rides available in central America. It drops 33 feet in just under a third of a mile and offers some fantastic opportunities for high class rapids. They are figured to be just class II or III when water levels are regular and going to the higher classes when the rains come pouring down. The tent sites are only $12 a day, and only half that in the winter months and they have two great hiking trails, the 14 mile River Corridor and the 3.5 mile Harris Creek. There is a 15,000 square foot visitor information/education center that cost $2.7 million to build.

  • Little Rock Kickball Association
Remember kickball in school? Well, now the city of Little Rock, Arkansas has created a kickball association with 96 teams in four different leagues and has just ended its 11th year. The four leagues are; the laid back league, for those wanting to remember the game from their youth, but for various reasons aren't in it for any special or physical reason; other than loving the sport and enjoying playing. The novice league is for the newcomers wanting to find out about the game and how to play, as well as getting some physical exercise. The intermediate league is for the competitors that know how to play and want to get down and dirty; but not every week. That is for the next league, the competitive league where everyone is out for blood and you better be ready for any kind of action. There are almost 40 pages of rules, both for your sakes and the opponents, with referees in attendance, and penalties severe. One of the first rules of course is the immediate statement and realization that you are physically fit to play the games and the rest follow from there. The game is very similar to baseball, only you are using a kickball, and running the bases, while the opponents try to put you out, however they can; and in this game, you can throw the ball at the runner and if you hit them, they are out. It is an old game from your childhood, but when played by adults, you must be 18 to play on a team, it can get fairly competitive and rough. But it is all in fun and for fun, so remember that good sportsmanship is important and not just bywords.
