Chinatown
More than fifty years ago, Chinatown was dedicated by a host of dignitaries
in a gala grand opening ceremony. Planned and owned by the Chinese, it began to
grow into the beautiful Chinatown we know today
with restaurants, shops, herbal stores, grocery stores, bean cake
factories, Chinese deli and offices. Dislocation began when the federal court
decided to condemn and construct Union Station upon the old Chinatown
site. Determined to survive, the SooHo shaped and finalized plans for
a new Chinatown with $100,000 dollars raised to start development.
This resulted in a climax in 1938 when the charm of
the Old Chinatown had returned with decorations, colorful lanterns and
banners. One famous man stated that Chinatown had made it through WWII
due to the enterprise, courage and pioneering spirit of many hard working
Chinese.

Farmers Market
Perhaps the most serendipitous story is that of Gilmore Island, where
a then entrepreneur named Arthur Gilmore would inadvertently make
decisions that would chart the course for an illustrious
future. Pulling their trucks into a vast expanse called Gilmore Island, a
group of farmers began to sell their produce causing a feeding frenzy by
customers who happened upon third and farifax in Los Angeles. Quickly becoming
a success, a make shift dirt parking lot formed and the first Farmers Market
was created. Shortly after, tycoon Gilmore decided to dissolve his partnership
and through casting lots happened upon 256 acres which he called dairy farm.
While digging for water for his livestock, Gilmore hit oil and from that point
the rest is history. Resulting from his sudden wealth,
he was responsible for a stadium, race track, first
professional football team, baseball team, and an oil company. Surpassing
the vision that launched Farmers Market, two entrepreneurs named Dahihjelm and
Beck boldly lauded their new idea for a "village square" which would sell
handmade goods - pottery, furniture, textiles ultimately
catapulting Farmers Market into one of the most lucrative markets in the United
States.
