  • Palacio de Bibliotecas Y Museos (National Library & Museum) National Museum & Library Madrid
    When visiting Madrid, you won't want to miss this amazing National Library and Museum.  This is a popular tourist attraction that shouldn't be missed when you are in Madrid.  The Palacio de Bibliotecas y Museos was completed in 1892, just in time to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus discovering America..   The National Museum & Library is located beside the Plaza de Colon ( Columbus Square). The building is home to the Museo Arqueologico Nacional (National Archaeological Museum) which was founded by Felipe III.  Along with the Biblioteca Nacional  (National Library) which was established in 1867 by Isabel II.  The National Archaeological Museum was moved to this site in 1895 and houses displays from the prehistoric era to the 19th century.  Some highlights of the collection include the Iberian Dama de Elche (Lady of Elche) she represents wealthy 5th century BC Iberian women.  Her elaborate head gear and hair combs are on display.  The ancient stone figure estimated to be over 2,500 years old and was discovered in the Alicante Province in 1897.  Also the Museum has an amazing collection of prehistoric replica cave paintings, found in the Cuevas de Altamira (Caves of Altamira) discovered near Santander in Northern Spain located underground below the gardens.  This collection is among the oldest of examples of such rare paintings in Europe dating back all the way from 12,000 B.C.  and illustrates a herd of wild bison, horses and boars.  Special highlights from The National Library include exhibits of tombs and an extensive collection of books totaling over several million with more than 120,000 being added annually.  On your way into The National Library you will see sculptures of famous literary & historical people such as Cervantes.   While touring the Museum you will see several amazing exhibits and fascinating artifacts from a collection of Visigothic votive crowns that were discovered in 1859 near Toledo, dating back to the 14th century along with a beautiful choir stall from the palace of Palencia from the 14th century as well.  Other items are Greek vases, Roman mosaics and exhibits from Ibiza, Rome and Paestum including statues of Tiberius and his mother Livia.  And a great Islamic Spain collection with an elaborate collection from 11th century Toledo.  Also on display are rare collections of Spanish Renaissance lusterware, Talavera pottery, rare 16th & 17th century Andalusian glassware and Retiro porcelain.   The National Archaeological Museum in Madrid contains a wealth of exhibits from Spain and beyond dating all the way back from prehistoric to Renaissance times.
