Humboldt National Forest
The biggest national forest
outside of Alaska is the 6.3 million acres of the Humboldt-Toiyabe
National Forest in Nevada. Different than other forests because it
is not continuous, but spread over a lot of land and even into
California. It crosses many mountain ranges, including; the Santa
Rosa in the north, Spring Mountain near Las Vegas in the south and
many areas in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The smaller and more
northeasterly forest is near Elko, White Pine, Humboldt, Nye and
Lincoln counties. There are 23 wilderness areas in the forest and
numerous campgrounds located within the forest that are very
enjoyable, serene and isolated. The hiking is incredible as you
walk along the trails going through the forest into the mountain
ranges, with springs, lakes, streams and other wonderful areas that
will take your mind off other things and problems and let you thrill
in this fabulous country. One of the uses of the economic recovery
money is to help clean up the forests, by repairing trails, bridges
and roads, make the fish passages better, restore the watersheds,
take away biomass that is hazardous and upgrade the many facilities
that are there making them more conservation conscious, energy
efficient and water conservation. A huge undertaking, but a
glorious one for the many people that will benefit from the
opportunity to work in the wild, take pride in their efforts and
their country, and give them a meaningful job.
