Things to do in Norwalk

  • Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Norwalk, Connecticut
This former mansion that was built in the Second Empire style of architecture is now a museum in Norwalk, Connecticut; and was spotlighted in the movies House of Dark Shadows and The Stepford Wives. It is a magnificent 62 room extravaganza that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and made a National Historic Landmark in 1971. Called one of the best examples of Second Empire styling and one of the first, it was built in 1864 and finished in 1868. A major renovation, costing around $6 million was to be finished in 2007, with a new elevator, air and heating systems and a sprinkler system. For over 10 years, it has been decorated for Christmas, with many rooms transformed into beautiful holiday tidings, complete with refreshments, music and of course, Santa. The ostentatious mansion is located in Mathews Park, where the Stepping Stones Museum for Children is also. The expansive estate was first called Elm Park, and built for LeGrand Lockwood, a banking and railroad magnate. It sits close by the Norwalk River, and designed by Detlef Lienau, who was instructed in Europe and lived in New York City. It is considered his best surviving work, with both skilled American and European artisans working and decorating the home. Distinguished decorating companies from New York, Herter Brothers and Leon Marcotte, were hired to furnish the interiors. It is most unfortunate that Lockwood's financial position reversed in 1869, and he died in 1872, which caused his estate to go into foreclosure in 1874. Two years later, in 1876, Charles D. Mathews and his wife Rebecca Thompson Mathews, purchased the estate and became the family retreat and main residence. It stayed in the family until their daughter Florence died in 1938, and by 1941, the estate was sold to the city. They made it a public park and during the 1950s, it was scheduled for demolition, but preservationists in the city prevailed and it was saved. The museum was created to manage the place, and soon it was made a landmark. The estate has been the site of an antique auction since 1978, and by 2006, when it was done during the last week of October, it attracted dealers from the entire state, as well as Ohio and Pennsylvania. During the turn of the 21st century, many of the statues and furnishings that had been in the house were re-acquired, and put back in place. Two exquisite marble statues that were sculpted in 1859 by Joseph Mozier, were originally purchased by Lockwood, cost the museum $185,000 to get back, and a sofa brought back cost another $165,000. The center rotunda of the mansion was painted by Paramount Pictures for the second Stepford Wives and the museum was paid $400,000 for that painting job. Paramount left some big paintings behind, that show the massiveness of the rotunda, and will stay in place until future funds can be acquired until curatorial renovation of the original surfaces can be accomplished. It has been used by victims and survivors of the 9/11 horror.

  • SONO Switch Tower Museum
Owned and operated by the Western Connecticut chapter of the National Railway Historical Society, the SONO switch tower museum in Norwalk, Connecticut is home to a wonderful museum that tells the story and shows the mechanisms that control the many railroad tracks that come to the area and are similar to those that are all across this great country. The towers were used to control the many tracks that criss crossed the nation, making sure that no two trains were running on the same track so that no accidents could occur. These towers held equipment that allowed the trains to switch from one track to another to ensure that one of these accidents never happened. An operator inside the tower would push or pull various levers that controlled the tracks mechanisms, changing the direction of the trains. The tower museum is located close to the South Norwalk Metro North station that is one of three that serve the people of Norwalk through the New Haven Line, which connects to the Danbury Branch going to the northeast corridor and the final stop before heading to Grand Central Terminal in New York City. The station is 41 miles from NYC and the average run time is 64 minutes, depending the run and time of the day. The station contains 816 parking spaces, and a small restaurant is located on the east side where breakfast is served for the morning commuters and a French inspired European style menu for the remainder of the day.

  • Norwalk Historical Society Norwalk Historical Society Norwalk, Connecticut
The Norwalk Historical Society is housed in the Mill Hill Historic Park, where there are three buildings that comprise the park; the law office of Governor Thomas Fitch IV, from 1740; the downtown district schoolhouse from 1826 and the Town Hall from 1835; plus the historic cemetery. This all makes up the living history museum known as the Mill Hill Historic Park; which is also known as Mill Hill Historical Complex and the Norwalk Mill Hill Museum. It is found in the center of the city, and during the 18th century was known as Whitney's Hill after the name of the miller. The cemetery, the third or fourth oldest in the city, was started by the First Congregational Church in 1767, where 11 veterans of the Revolutionary War are buried. The Fitch house was built in 1740 on Goodman Hoyt Hill, that later became Earl's Hill. Governor Fitch passed on in 1774, leaving the house to his wife Hannah and son Thomas Fitch V, who was leading the troops that the famous song Yankee Doodle was written about; which is also the state's song. The home was burned a bit by the British when they raided the city in 1779, but was renovated and lived in by the family's descendants until 1945. The portion that wasn't razed was removed in 1956, when the state was removing the hill so that the new turnpike could pass through. They then renovated the remains to look like an office that Fitch might have used. The very first schoolhouse in the city was built in 1678, but the Mill Hill schoolhouse was constructed in 1826, near the downtown area and was subsequently moved for encroaching neighborhoods until 1876. When the construction of Interstate 95 was coming into the eastern part of Norwalk, the schoolhouse was moved to Mill Hill. When the town was started in 1651, a meeting house was built and finished by 1659; which also served as the Congregational Church. In 1726, the church members asked that the civic meetings could be held elsewhere, and city leaders honored their request, by having the meetings in private homes and finally moving into the Up Town District School. The first Town House was built in 1736, and then another at Mill Hill but was burned down by the British in 1779. After the burning, a committee led by Colonel Thomas Fitch V to plan another town meeting place and it was finished in 1794. This meeting place wasn't kept up and by 1834, it was torn down by vandals. This present meeting house was constructed in 1835, by Captain Lewis Raymond, who had brick to the city that was originally used as ballast for a ship. It was the third or fourth house that was built of brick in the city. It served in this capacity until the city and town were integrated in 1913; and the meetings were moved to the city hall. The Norwalk chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution leased the town meeting house starting in 1924, then built a kitchen and bathroom on the rear with a basement. The house is used presently for exhibits of social occasions, historic memorabilia, educational programs and meetings. The entire complex is taken care of by the Norwalk Historical Society and the Norwalk-Village Green Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

  • Norwalk MuseumNorwalk Museum Norwalk, Connecticut
The museum got its beginnings by a generous donation from Manice deForest Lockwood, who gave his family's treasures that consisted of Norwalk Americana of exotic china, furniture and many other family artifacts that belonged to one of the founding families of the city. It was originally called the Lockwood House Museum that opened in 1973, after many years of planning, with the building and furnishings coming from Lockwood and his cousin Julia B. Lockwood of Pasadena, California. The site was given by the city which included one acre of gardens and lawns with a parking lot shared with the city's health department. Margaret Hoyt Smith, a well known local architect, designed the structure. The museum stayed open at the East Avenue address, growing the collections for the following 24 years. In 1988, a new city hall opened on the avenue, and the front lawn of the museum was turned into a parking lot for the city. People stopped coming and joining so the museum began to decline. In 1994, a public hearing was held to decide what to do with the former city hall that was owned by the city and was empty. Mr. Bloom, the director of the museum suggested using that building and grounds to hold the museum, since it was close to the Maritime Aquarium and in the heart of the historic district. In the fall of 1995, the entire collection and holdings were moved into the freshly restored building where its size and location helped to enhance the attendance.

  • Norwalk State Heritage ParkNorwalk State Heritage Park Norwalk, Connecticut
The park is a mixed urban waterfront development project that is located near the estuary of the Norwalk River, that goes into the Long Island Sound and finally the Atlantic Ocean. It is not a large area, but it is complex and important as an ecological system and this park and the islands nearby are a wonderful illustration of the finite balance of heavy human usage and exciting natural beauty. The shoreline showcases the entire panoply of urban usage that encompasses residential, recreational, commercial and industrial. The city is well known for its awesome oyster industry and is considered one of the biggest oyster producing ports in the country. The area's sensitivity to the environment is enlarged by the crucial commercial business that is completely dependant on the water quality that flows across the oyster beds that lie at the mouth of the estuary. The waterfront oasis is one of the city's greatest treasures and in 2001, the same year the 350th anniversary of the city, it officially became the Norwalk State Heritage Park. It contains the park, a boardwalk, amphitheater, boat docks, museums, visitor's center, children's playgrounds and artwork that beckons to residents to come out and enjoy, to bask in the glory of this fantastic wonderland that does so much for the city's residents and visitors to relieve the stress and turmoil of everyday living. This park depends so much on the quality of the water here that many groups, both public and private, are involved in the monitoring of this great resource. Fortunately, it is supported by local and federal funds, as well as the involvement of the city government, businesses, corporations and local non-profits. These devoted groups work hand in hand to make the park a wonderful example of enlightened and intelligent discourse to protect and maintain our planet's most valuable resource; water.
