Texas was never really known as a state where you could strike oil until just over 100 years ago. Oil had been a constant factor in the history of Texas stretching all the way back to the early Indian inhabitants who used small amounts of oil in their daily life. However as colonies began moving west oil began to surface in many areas but always appeared to elude capture. That is to say that all drilling in areas that appeared to be oil infested were unsuccessful. Over nearly 400 years oil drilling appeared to be a lost cause in the state of Texas until in 1901 in the city of Beaumont on top of Spindletop hill a large gush of oil could be seen from miles away. A successful drill on Spindletop changed the production rate from 836,000 barrels yearly to 63 million barrels; yes it was that big of a discovery. The Gladys City Boomtown Museum has sought out to ensure that every inhabitant of the Beaumont town knows about the history behind the wealthy town and its ever growing oil production. Over the past one hundred years the city of Beaumont has seen a rich history as the oil rush began. Big names and small names contributed to the constant pole of luck as some of these characters have struck oil and others have gone home empty handed. This large spacious house is a cornerstone to the city of Beaumont.
