Things to do in Bronx

Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum Bronx, New York
This magnificent estate is now a city landmark and museum situated in the northern portion of Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx, New York, that had been the residence of Marie Lorillard Bartow and Robert Bartow, dating back to 1654. The house had been the property of the Lords of the Manor of Pelham, that would be eventually restored, remodeled and made bigger by its newer Federal style of architecture, with the present building having been done during the period between 1836 and 1842. The ownership of the estate would be passed between the Pell and Bartow families for generations until it was eventually sold to the city in 1888 by descendants of the original family. It would then sit empty for many years before being leased to Mrs. Charles Frederick Hoffman, Jr., better known as Zelia Krumbhaar Preston in 1914. The organization that Zelia founded, was the International Garden Club, Inc, to promote formal gardens, which has grown to include the restoration and preservation of vintage houses. During the early years of the 20th century, it would enjoy new exteriors and a modern formation of formal gardens, and in 1936, Mayor Fiorello La Guardia would use the mansion as his summer residence, while his main summer retreat would be constructed at Orchard Beach. The interior of this fabulous house is filled with period artifacts, furniture and furnishings, would be opened to the public in 1946, and contains the Pell family burial plots. It would be added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, as well as the carriage house and mansion, and become a National Historic Landmark in 1976. It is a gorgeous Greek revival styled house that welcomes visitors wanting to learn more about the past, its antiquities and the people that lived here. The mansion has a freestanding spiral staircase, floor to ceiling windows on the second floor and tours of the flora filled grounds and gardens that grace the estate. The estate lies on property that had been home to the Siwanoy Indians, and they would surely marvel at the huge grey stone monstrosity that occupies that old land now. The park has a great museum store and numerous picnic areas, with some restaurants located on the grounds.

Bronx ZooBronx Zoo Bronz, New York
The Bronx Zoo probably doesn't need much introduction since it is the biggest metropolitan zoo in the country, sitting in the Bronx Park area of the Bronx, New York, on 265 acres of park lands and natural habitats, that offers the finest areas for animals to live. Fordham University had owned much of the land hereabouts, but would sell it to the city as long as it would be used for gardens and a zoo, as well installing a natural buffer of sorts between the university and advancing hordes of people that wanted to put houses and apartments everywhere they choose to live. During the 1880s, the city would then set aside the land for future developments as parks, but in 1895, would create the New York Zoological Society to begin a zoo, and that group was to be the forerunner of the Wildlife Conservation Society. The zoo opened in 1899 with 843 animals living in 22 environments, under the leadership of William Temple Hornaday, while Heins and LaFarge designed the original structures as an array of beaux-arts pavilions encompassing the sea lion pool in the center that was created in a huge circle. The Rainey Memorial Gates would be created by well known sculptor, Paul Manship, dedicated to the big game hunter, Paul James Rainey, and these gates would be added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. In 2006, the zoo opened eco-friendly restrooms outside the gates, that included composting toilets that would serve half a million people a year and save a million gallons water every year. By 2010, the zoo housed over 4000 animals representing 650 species, with quite a number of them being added to the endangered lists or threatened lists.

Edgar Allen Poe CottageEdgar Allen Poe Cottage Bronx, New York
TThe Edgar Allen Poe Cottage is more often referred to as the Poe Cottage and is the former residence of famous American writer, Edgar Allen Poe, by the Grand Concourse in the Bronx, New York. It is close to its original foundation, having been moved to the Poe Park, believed to have been constructed in 1797, and part of the Historic House Trust that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The Poe family, that included Edgar, his wife, Virginia Clemm and her mother, Maria, came here in 1846, after living at Turtle Bay in Manhattan for a while. At that period, Fordham was pretty rural and just had been connected to the city by rail. The cottage, that sat on Kingsbridge Road was rather small and simple, with a sitting room on the first floor, as well as kitchen, with the second floor housing the Poe's bedroom and study. The front porch housed pet caged songbirds, and sat on two acres of land, with Edgar paying just $5 a month or $100 a year. John Valentine was the owner, purchasing it from Richard Corsa in 1846 for $1000. Although it was small and contained few furnishings, it was quite homey and humble, but with a refinement to the entire scene that would marvel its visitors coming here to see Poe. Many believe that his last short story, "Landor's Cottage" was inspired by the cottage the Poe's lived in, who thought very highly of it, with its simple and quaint qualities. It was in this unique environment that Poe would pen "Annabel Lee" and "Ulalume" with the family cat sitting calmly on his shoulder, as if whispering advice into his ear. He would eventually publish his series on the "Literati of New York City" that were controversial conversations about the literary figures and their works, in that era, that included such well known writers as Nathaniel Parker Willis, Lewis Gaylord Clark, Thomas Dunn English and Margaret Fuller. While there, Virginia would struggle with tuberculosis, until she finally succumbed in the first floor bedroom in 1847. Poe would follow her a few years later in 1849, while visiting Baltimore, and Maria wouldn't learn of it until a few days later, after he had been buried. She would move out and live with a family in Brooklyn.

Van Cortlandt HouseVan Cordlant House Bronx, New York
The Van Cortlandt House Museum is also called the Frederick Van Cortlandt House or Van Cortlandt House, and is the oldest structure in the Bronx, New York. It had been constructed in the Georgian style by Frederick Van Cortlandt in 1748 for his family, although he would pass on before it was finished, and the estate inherited by his son, James. The house is a two and a half story L shaped house with double hipped roof, constructed of dressed fieldstone and showcases the high Georgian style. The family was a wealthy mercantile family well known in the affairs of New York, began a grain plantation and grist mill on their property, and the home would be used in the Revolutionary War by Washington, Lafayette and Rochambeau. By 1889, the family had occupied the estate for over 140 years, at which time, it would be sold to the city of New York and converted into a public parkland, being added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1967, and a National Historic Landmark in 1976, operating as a house museum since 1897, that would make it the first in the city and the fourth one in the nation. The magnificent estate has nine rooms decorated in the period furnishings, furniture and decorative arts of the 18th and 19th century, as well as herb garden, east and west parlors, unfinished chamber, nursery, dining room, Dutch chamber, kitchen, east and west bedchambers and main entrance, with great central hall. There are a few educational programs available at the house that include the Compleat Soldier that showcases the life of a soldier during the Revolutionary War, Design a Delft Tile, that looks at 18th century Dutch decorative arts, and Life in Lower Yonkers that highlights the life of a child during the 18th century.

Valentine-Varian House Valentine-Varian House Bronx, New York
TThe Valentine Varian House in the Bronx is the second oldest house and oldest surviving farmhouse in the city, built by Isaac Valentine in 1758, and would be housing the Varian family until 1905, when it was sold. Isaac Varian, the city's 63rd mayor would live there, and today, it is part of the Historic House Trust, containing the Museum of Bronx History and the offices of the Bronx County Historical Society. This gorgeous historic house is two stories high, a five bay fieldstone residence with gable roof, being moved to its current location in 1965, rejuvenated in the years of 1965 to 1968. In the Revolutionary War, the house would be occupied by American, British and Hessian troops, and still survive after numerous battles that had been fought nearby. The part that the house took part in during the war is documented in a book that was published in 1983, and then during the 1960s, it would be vandalized a number of times before being converted into a museum. Since then, it has showcased many exhibits about the Bronx and its history; with the Bronx River Soldier statue located on the grounds. Originally, the estate had a blacksmith shop, farmland, outhouses and slaves; and the site of six skirmishes between English and American troops that occupied the house for the majority of the war. Once the war was over, the Valentines would fall onto some hard times, eventually losing the house to the Dutch Reformed Church, until 1791, when it would be purchased by the Varian family that stayed there until 1905, when William F. Beller bought it. William C. Beller would donate the house to the historical society in 1965.
