Battle of Great BridgeReenactment Battle of Great Bridge Chesapeake, Virginia
The Battle of Great Bridge was near the city of where Chesapeake, Virginia now occupies, and was fought on December 9, 1775, quite early in the Revolutionary War. It was a victory for the Continental Army and militia troops that would lead to the departure of Governor Lord Dunmore and the last remaining troops of the British from the Virginia colony. As the political and military tensions rose in the early months of 1775, Dunmore and his Whig leaders were recruiting men to become soldiers in the British army and started a struggle for the military supplies that were located there. Soon, it shifted to Norfolk, as Dunmore took sanctuary on a Royal Navy ship, while his troops fortified one side of the important river crossing south of Norfolk at Great Bridge, and opposing forces on the other side. Dunmore ordered his men to attack the opposition, but were soundly beaten back; with William Woodford, commander of the rebel forces, stating that it was a second Bunker Hill. Eventually Norfolk, which had been a Tory stronghold, was abandoned by Dunmore and the Tories, as they all went aboard the navy ships in the harbor; but came back in January, 1776 to destroy the city of Norfolk.  General George Washington was well aware of Dunmore and stated at the time that if they didn't do something about him, Dunmore would become the most formidable enemy that the new nation would have. When Dunmore had come to Norfolk, he had ordered the bridge to be fortified since it was the only passable road that led from the city to the state of North Carolina, and bordered on the flanks by the Great Dismal Swamp. Dunmore had ordered 25 men to go to the bridge to construct a small stockade fort called Fort Murray on the Norfolk side of the bridge, and took off the planks that were laid on the bridge, so crossing would be even more difficult. The small fort had two cannons and some small swivel guns, and soon their ranks were increased with men from the Queen's Own regiments and freed slaves that formed the Ethiopian regiment; which raised the garrison to between 40 and 80 men. Because of Dunmore's proclamation against the rebels, the colony's assembly ordered troops to march against Norfolk and displace Dunmore. William Woodford was a colonel that headed the Continental Army's 2nd Virginia Regiment with 400 men and 100 riflemen from the Culpepper Minutemen.  By the time the fighting began, the British had mustered about 700 men and is a very interesting story about the history of our country. The area is filled with the memories and was almost destroyed due to construction sites in the battlefield area, but locals organized in 1999 and were able to save the region, with the park opening this year.

    Virginia ZooVirginia Zoo Norfolk, Virginia
The Virginia Zoological Park can be found in Norfolk, Virginia, opening in 1892 when the city bought 65 acres of land that is now part of Lafayette Park. The zoo officially opened in 1900, as various animals were being acquired, and by 1901, it had grown to more than 200 animals that included; reptiles, birds and mammals. During 1974, the zoo area was fenced off from the rest of the park and renamed the Lafayette Zoological Park, although the residents of nearby LaVallette Street can still see the elephant enclosure from their homes. Evidently new arrivals to the neighborhood have called police after spotting the elephants, only to learn that there is a zoo located there. The park was renamed the Virginia Zoological Park in 1985, and is referred to as the Virginia Zoo more often than not. It was accredited in 1987, and in 1992, a master plan was drawn up to include five continents of zoogeographic locations with a new education complex and visitor center. Those continents that are included are; North America, Australia, Africa, Asia and South America. In 1999, the first phase opened with the Gelada baboon exhibit and Xaxaba African village, as well as celebrating the 100th anniversary of the zoo and park. In 2001, the second phase started which included the North American exhibit; and in 2002, phase 1 part 2 opened that was the African okavango delta exhibit and finished the first phase. In 2004, part 1 of phase 2 opened which contained the prairie dog exhibit, and in 2005, the zoo was able to obtain its third elephant and named it Cita. This year, 2010, the first part of phase IV opened with the Trail of the Tiger that contained numerous fauna of India and southeast Asia. Today, the zoo houses 350 animals, set on 53 acres of marvelously landscaped grounds with exotic types of species found lurking at every bend. Many of the exhibits can allow visitors the opportunity to get face to face with the wonderful creatures and the perfect picture moment for you and your child. It is a great zoo, full of friendly staff people and hilarious antics by some of the strangest animals around.

    Moses Myers House
Moses Myers House Norfolk, VirginiaThe Moses Myers House was the home of one of the nation's first millionaires and first permanent Jewish settler, who had this magnificent Federal period house constructed in 1792. Almost three quarters of the furnishings are original to the first generation of Myers family members that live here, and showcases the French influence that had become significant during that period. The house is the only historic home in America that has allowed historians to interpret the traditions of the early Jewish immigrants. The elegant brick house was one of the first that was constructed after the Revolutionary War, after the town had been almost completely destroyed by the British bombing and fire that followed. In 1892, Barton Myers, the city's mayor started the extensive restoration of the house; which contains many family heirlooms and portraits painted by well known artists, Gilbert Stuart and Thomas Sully. Again, in 2004 and 2005, the house was rejuvenated to bring it back to its original condition in the early 19th century color schemes and neoclassical architectural ornaments. The gardens are now in the process of being restored to their original condition by the Garden Club of Virginia. Just a short time after Moses and Eliza Judah Myers were married, they boarded a ship leaving England and sailing to Norfolk, Virginia, in 1787 and became the first permanent Jewish settlers in Norfolk. Moses became a successful businessman and with his import/export business he soon became one of the nation's first millionaires, building the house as a testament to that achievement. It is a 13 room, federal brick house, where they raised 13 children and entertained some of the most powerful people in the land. The house has been added to the National Register of Historic Places and had such notable visitors as Daniel Webster and President James Monroe. Five generations of the Myers family lived here until it was donated to become a museum, with so many outstanding relics left there by the family; like the spinning wheel that Eliza used, clothing worn by her also is still there, with the family's china still in the cupboards. A magnificent set of dueling pistols are located here, that many say were the same pair that were used by Stephen Decatur and James Barron; and the family's Bible, although the family was traditionally Jewish, it was one of the few books available to record the marriages, deaths, births and other significant events in the family's history.

Norfolk History Museum at the Willoughby Baylor HouseNorfolk History Museum Norfolk, Virginia
The Norfolk History Museum at the Willoughby-Baylor House showcases the marvelous history of the area, in the newly rejuvenated house that was constructed in 1794 by Captain William Willoughby, the descendant of English immigrant Captain Thomas Willoughby I, who had received a Royal land grant in 1636 for 200 acres of land, and 50 of those acres would eventually grow into the city of Norfolk in 1682. After the gorgeous house was refurbished in 2005, the museum was moved here to better show the many artifacts and relics of a bygone era, with the finest military, architectural, maritime and commercial exhibits in the region. The garden that is part of the former estate was used as a colonial garden, and is what many of that generation of homeowners did, having their own garden located just outside the kitchen. There is even a oyster shell drive, that was used back then so that the mud and other materials wouldn't end up being washed away. The house would remain in the family until 1890 and then sold; unfortunately falling into dismal disrepair and had been readied for demolition until it was purchased by the Norfolk Historic Foundation in 1964 and then rejuvenated. The house has been taken care of by the Chrysler Museum of Art since 1969, and then opened in 2005 as a museum.
