INTERESTED IN THE HISTORY OF CLOVIS, NEW MEXICO?
Clovis’ success, since its founding by the railroad in 1907, has been
its steady growth. Clovis "caught on like a grass fire," although it has
never been known as a boomtown. At first it was a wide-open town on the High
Plains of Eastern New Mexico with saloons, gambling, shady ladies, and its
share of gunfights, some humorous as well as deadly. We resemble a "cowtown"
in that our growth has mostly been based on cattle. We also raise more wheat
than any other county in New Mexico.
Our history includes "Clovis Man,"
an archeological site and early man
culture that dates to 12,500 years ago, discovered here in 1929. Today the
Clovis Man site in Blackwater Draw is the oldest accepted culture in the New
World. Human remains have not been found, even though the massive deposits
of bone, tools, spear points, and other evidence suggests future excavation
may reveal such remains.
Clovis has a mild daytime climate and low humidity that makes for
year-round comfort. We have an average of 335 days of sunshine and 18 inches
of rainfall annually. Our altitude is 4,260 feet, making our climate hard to
beat with no floods, no forest fires, no landslides, no quakes, no smog, and
no hurricanes or volcanoes.
Clovis welcomes everyone, to come and live here, or if that is not an
option, come and shop!
