Beneath the Streets
The city of Havre has a rich history, especially when it comes to the original community’s early business. Some would say when the town was founded that the thriving businesses could be found in what some might call the “Underground Mall.” These small businesses were established in the earliest days of the city, and still hold a tight and realistic colonial style look. This fantastic tour lets you visit all the places in town that still function the way they did over a hundred years ago! Take a step back to the Sporting Eagle Saloon one of the few turn-of-the-century saloons where notorious cowboys would kick back and gamble and drink to the entertainment! Next head over to the opium den, one of only three proven to have existed in the early days. Visit Chinese Laundry, an ethnic restaurant and more! One of the most popular places in the tour is the bordello, something few have the opportunity to see! This fun and inexpensive tour is the perfect way to enjoy your visit in the area, in fact it brings people in from all over the state! Make sure you visit “Havre Beneath the Streets” while your in town, we can promise you wont regret this educational experience!

Wahkpa Chu’gn Archaeological Site
This massive archaeological site is located just outside the city of Havre. With a nearly unpronounceable name the Wahkpa Chu’gn site or Walk-Pa-Chew-Gun site is an extremely educational and entertaining opportunity for you and your family or friends! This site is the most extensive Native American hunting ground for bone deposit in the northern Great Plains, the incredible work being done here has also made the most preserved site also. After a successful hunt the massive buffalo would be stripped of flesh and skin for food and clothing, and the large carcass which by now was simply bones would be dropped into this valley. With a tour guide you can get an up close look at remnants left behind by the Native Americans that lived here in the area. It is important to note that this isn’t a museum where you have to see things behind glass, this is an actual historical site, and you get an up close look at some incredible sites that few people around the world will ever see. Make sure you visit Wahkpa Chu’gn Archaeological Site while you are in the area!

INTERESTED IN THE HISTORY OF HAVRE, MONTANA?
Located in the roaming plains of north-central Montana, Havre began
over 100 years ago as the first trains forged across the Great Plains. Havre
quickly became the transportation hub of the area, providing goods and
supplies to the area trappers, miners and military stationed at Fort Assinniboine,
six miles southwest of town.
Prior to 1910, the area was devoted primarily to raising sheep, cattle and
horses. Ranches soon became lesser in numbers however, as farms started to
produce some of the world’s greatest spring and winter wheats.
Although agriculture is the undisputed financial mainstay in the area, the
economy is diversified with farming, ranching, hospital and health services,
education, professional and retail businesses, manufacturing, and railroad
industries. Havre is the focal point of commercial activity in the area. As
the largest city on the Hi-Line, it serves as a wholesale distribution and
retail center for communities within 150 miles. The diverse geography of
Havre includes the Milk River and the badlands nearby it, golden wheat
fields, and the rising peaks of the Bears Paw Mountains, towering several
thousand feet above the plains surrounding the city. The peaks of Mount
Baldy, Bates and Otis have elevations of 6,000 to 7,000 feet and are all
within 20 minutes of Havre.
