Located on the Llano
Estacado in southeastern New Mexico, Hobbs was founded in 1907 as an
agricultural and ranching community and became prominent after the discovery
of oil in June of 1928. People flocked to Hobbs to work in the oilfields,
some living in tents. Today, Hobbs is a city of almost 30,000 inhabitants
and is deemed the "oil capital" of New Mexico. Hobbs boasts two golf
courses, the Harry McAdams State Park, and is the headquarters of two
national soaring associations.
HOBBS CLIMATE
Summer is a period of
warmth punctuated by showers and thunderstorms from June through September.
Fall and winter bring a marked decline in rainfall and storms. Nights can be
frosty but the days warm considerably. Spring is dry and windy with rainfall
varying greatly from year to year.
