Bailey House MuseumBailey House Museum Wailuku, Maui, Hawaii
The Bailey House Museum in Wailuku, Maui, Hawaii has been known as the Old Bailey House as well, that is owned and run by the Maui Historical Society. The house sits at the beginning of the Iao Valley, inside the former royal compound of Kahekili II, the last ruling chief of Maui and was constructed in 1833 to become one of the first western-style houses in the region; listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The house had originally been slated as a mission for children and adults, but in 1837, it would be converted to the Wailuku Female Seminary, which was a boarding school that taught not only Christianity and academic ideas, like the three R's, but it taught domestic skills as well, like housekeeping, cooking and sewing. It would be run by Theodosia and Rev. Jonathan Smith Green until 1844, when Caroline and Edward Bailey would take over. The seminary had the sponsorship of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, but it still would be closed down in 1847, because of the lack of funding to continue. Eventually, the house and sugar cane fields would become a part of the Wailuku Sugar Plantation, which became a part of C. Brewer & Co. In 1951, the historical society was born and the Bailey House Museum opened in 1957, when it was called Hale Ho 'ike 'ike or House of Display. In 1991, the estate would be purchased by Masaru "Pundy" Yokouchi and then donated to the society. There are a number of exhibits located there, with the top floor holding the furnishings as if they had been in the early 19th century, while the lower floor has the pre-European contact relics that included weapons, tools and utensils; a part of the David Dwight Baldwin land snail shell collection, that is quite significant since foreign snails has been introduced by various means and the indigenous species that had been endemic to the island is now extinct; oil paintings by Edward Bailey, who was a Sunday painter with about 100 Maui landscapes; a model of Hokulea, a modern day copy of an ancient Polynesian style sailing ship and a wooden statue of the Hawaiian demi-god, Kamapua'a, that had been discovered in a cave, where it had been located, after being there for more than a century. It is the last surviving wooden statue on the island that would survive King Kamehameha II's 1819 purge of the religion that had been a part of the island's history and culture. There is a small shelter outside that showcases Duke Kahanamoku's 1919 redwood surfboard and a 33 foot 1900 period outrigger canoe called Honaunau that had been used for fishing and carved from a single koa log. It is believed to be one of the last koa fishing boats made in the state of Hawaii. There are marvelous gardens located on the ground surrounding the house, that exhibit the beautiful flora of the islands and a gift shop that contains items made on the island to the south of the house. The museum contains numerous historical papers and documents that are available for researchers to peruse and study.
