Things to do in Kona

Mauna Kea Summit Mauna Kea Summit Kona, Hawaii
Visit Mauna Kea is a volcano on one of the Hawaiian islands, rising more than 13,000 feet above the ocean, as the highest peak in the state, although a big part of the volcano is located underneath the vibrant blue waters that encompass it, and if it was all above the waters, it would be taller and higher than Mount Everest. It is over a million years old, and according to Hawaiian legends, their mountains are sacred, with Mauna Kea, the most sacred of all. An ancient law allowed only the highest ranking officials of the tribal chiefs to go to its summit, with the ancient peoples that lived along its base, would forage in the magnificent forests for food, and quarry the basalts that wound its flanks for tool production. It is made up of three distinct ecological areas that begin with the alpine climate on its peak, sandwicense forest on its flanks, and an Acaicia koa forest that has been cleared by the old sugar business, at the bottom. Because of its high altitude, stable airflow and dry environment, it is considered to be one of the finest sites in the world for astronomical observation, and after an access road was constructed in 1964, thirteen telescopes that were financed by 11 countries have been installed at the top for scientific research, that reaches across the electromagnetic spectrum from visible light to radio and is now the biggest facility of its kind in the world.

Kona coffee traces a history that goes back 180 years to Africa, although all the Kona coffee trees came from one tree that was located in the king of France's private greenhouse, and the way that you brew it is equally important to get that exquisite flavor that has captured many coffee connoisseurs. The Mountain Thunder plantation family has done a lot of research to find out the best way to brew this great coffee, and have created some excellent recipes from the folks that work there, the best way to grow it, process it, roast and bag it, all the way to the final process of brewing. It is hard to fathom, but every roast brings out various flavors in the coffee, and learning the best way to roast and brew this exceptional coffee brings you closer to having the finest cup of coffee, or even the best iced coffee in the world.

    Holualoa VillageHolualoa Village Kona, Hawaii
Holualoa Village is set against the slopes of Mount Hualalai, the Big Island, Hawaii, with a history and atmosphere that will take you to another world, with magnificent sights, sounds and smells that will transport you there in a moment, where there had been farms and a daily life routine that is quite different from what you see today. Now, those farms have been replaced with pool halls, small shops, saloons and art galleries, with beautiful lush scenery, world famous coffee and a vacation area that is growing more congested, although that is what some folks enjoy, even though they are trying to escape the fast paced daily routines of their lives just to have a few days in paradise. During the early days of the 1900s, transportation meant using a horse, Model T or donkey, with the majority of the people living around the mountain areas, and Holualoa was the center of all that activity, even though tourism has taken over much of the island's daily routine. The village sits beside Mamlahoa Highway, on both of its sides, lined with charming art galleries and quaint workshops filled with artisans making their own designs and crafts, meant to be sold to the passing by tourists, that help them live to create more and more works to sell to live and enjoy the beauty, panoramic views and other enjoyable things on this island. It is also the premier coffee town, with a great mountain location that is great for orchards that blossom with magnificent and colorful tropical flowers and fruits. They say that driving down the highway, the only way in or out of the small village, is a gastronomic feast, with the most enjoyable aromas that you'll ever partake of on a road trip. The word Holualoa means long sled run in Hawaiian, and came from the ancient native practice of sledding along the moutain slopes using "holua" or wooden sleds. A European named Samuel Reverend Ruggles would introduce coffee to Holualoa by bringing cuttings from Brazil, although it wouldn't become a major crop until later in the 19th century, with it being raised in big orchards until the price drop of 1899, when the plantation owners would be forced to rent their lands to workers and tenants. These were mostly Japanese, that would begin raising small quantities of the aromatic beans, but high quality to be used for trading.

    Hulhe'e PalaceHulhe'e Palace Kona, Hawaii
Hulihee Palace is located in historic Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, on Ali'i Drive, and the former home of the royal family, and then converted into a museum that is featuring relics and furniture from that period, originally constructed in 1838, by John Adams Kuakini, governor of the island of Hawaii, during the kingdom of Hawaii. It was built using lava rock, although John would die in 1844 and leave the estate to his son, or adopted son, William Pitt Leleiohiku I, who was the actual son of Prime Minister William Pitt Kalanimoku. Leliohoku would die in the measles epidemic of 1848, and leave the estate to his son, John William Pitt Kinau, however, he would pass on while still young and leave the palace to his mother, Princess Ruth Ke'elikolani, so she made the estate her main residence, and live there for the majority of her life, preferring to sleep in the grass hut that had been constructed on the palace grounds for her, rather than sleeping in the palace. It has a magical history, and would be passed along to various members of the royal family, until 1927, when it would be acquired by the Daughters of Hawai'i, a group that is dedicated to preserving the cultural heritage of the Hawaiian islands, who then rejuvenated the palace and transform it into a museum, being added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. It was damaged somewhat during the 2006 Hawaii earthquake, with small cracks appearing in the walls and ceilings as the quake centered on the coast of Kohala. The palace doesn't look like the majestic grandiose structures of Europe, America or the Far East, but it does represent a palace to the people of this great state, and according to their simple living styles and needs, it probably is.
