Anyone who lives in Monroe Louisiana can tell you about the newly made Monroe Aviation Museum. During the mid 1900’s this Selman Field Army-Air Force Navigation School was opened, the largest school for training pilots to navigate aircraft in the U.S. Because of this over 15,000 air men graduated from this school during the years of WWII. During WWII roughly 1,500 of the graduates died, and memorials at the school were set up to commemorate their sacrifice. In 1986 a large reunion took place and artifacts that belonged to the lost navigators were gathered and placed together as part of the reunion. In 2000, fourteen years later these artifacts were then placed into a museum using one of the existing wings to the academy. Over the several years since the museum’s opening the spectrum of the exhibits has broadened, and anything and everything significant that took place in the history of the Air Force is now on display. The primary focus of the museum is the Selman Field Army-Airforce Navigation School, which served as the primary source of navigators during WWII. This school is rich with history and surprising breakthroughs that directly influenced the evolution of the United States Air Force. Now with an amazing amount of aviation memorabilia and the schools retired training equipment, you can explore the history of aviation like never before!
