Evergreen Museum  Evergreen Museum & Library Baltimore, Maryland
The Evergreen Museum and Library is also called the Evergreen House and sits on the campus of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, located between the campuses of Loyola College and the College of Notre Dame; and with the Homewood Museum are called the Johns Hopkins University Museums. The magnificent mansion was constructed in the mid19th century, then purchased by the president of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, John W. Garrett in 1878. During that era, railroads had become an important part of the nation's businesses and the Garrett family owned and operated one of the biggest in the nation, which would cause the mansion to expand and become both extravagant and famous. Garrett's son, T. Harrison would add a wing that contained the billiard room, gymnasium and bowling alley, with the gym being converted into the art gallery and private theater. The mansion would be home for the family until 1942, when it was donated to the university, since Garrett was a trustee of the Peabody Institute, so he would ask its founder, George Peabody, to encourage Johns Hopkins to create the bequest that would eventually create the Johns Hopkins University, their hospital and School of Medicine. The estate would be added to the list of the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The mansion is a fabulous example of gilded age architecture, sitting so fantastic on the 26 acre estate, that was well landscaped in northern Baltimore, although the original design had called for a more simple Italianate home, but since this was the awesome Garrett family, it would soon become a 48 room mansion with 23 karat gold plated bathroom, theater painted by the famous Russian artist Leon Bakst and a 30,000 volume library.  The mansion contains robust decorative objects in it that showcase the family's travels and interests, and includes paintings by Degas, Picasso and Modigliani, a red Asian rug that exhibits Chinese and Japanese elements and glass by Tiffany or Dutch marquetry. The outside of the mansion would be used as a model for the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland in California and it is offering tours today.

    Liberty ReservoirLiberty Reservoir Baltimore, Maryland
The Liberty Reservoir is situated in the suburbs of Baltimore, Maryland, separating the counties of Carroll and Baltimore occupying 3100 acres that had been the former town of Oakland Mills and the Melville Woolen mills. It would be bought from the Melville family in the 1930s, and a rumor began spreading that the town would be destroyed, although not many of the townspeople would leave. In 1942, an announcement would be made that a reservoir was to be constructed, but the reality of the event wouldn't take hold until the lumberjacks arrived. The government purchased Melville Woolen mills in 1951, for $1.5 million, as well as the houses and farms that would be in the way of the lake, and forced many tenant farmers out of the region. Even though the mill was dynamited, the five story shell would still be standing, and it would take years for the water to rise enough to cover them; and during the following years, the natural springs, water sources and tributaries would completely fill in the area where the mills had once been located. In February of 1956, the water would crest for the first time. The Patapsco River's northern branch would become the main source of water supply to the reservoir, with other tributaries bringing in more as well, so that eventually, the reservoir would be spread across eleven miles and a shoreline of some 81 miles; with depths of 59 to a maximum of 144 feet deep. The reservoir has become a major resource of recreational activities that include biking, fishing, bird watching, hiking and just plain relaxing and enjoying the weather, the water and the beauty of nature. The city doesn't allow campfires, swimming or alcohol consumption, although in the summer months, there are usually many folks taking advantage of the cool waters to go in for a quick dip. Now, there are watershed rangers that patrol the cities watersheds, with full police powers that enforce the regulations of the city and the state.

Library Pride of Baltimore II The Pride of Baltimore II Baltimore, Maryland
The Pride of Baltimore II was launched in 1988 when the original Pride of Baltimore was lost during a return trip from Britain, this new ship would continue the role of the state's flagship and Goodwill ambassador, which entailed promoting tourism and business in the state. Just as the original wasn't a copy of any particular ship, the Pride II would also be unique, although they both would represent a kind of vessel that had been known as the Baltimore clipper, constructed to the contemporary standards for comfort and especially, seaworthiness. She was designed by Thomas C. Gillmer, the vessel is similar to its predecessor, a topsail schooner, with two big gaff sails, with one on the boom and the other a loose-footed, a square topsail, flying topgallant on the foremast, numerous headsails and a main gaff topsail. The Pride II also flies studding sails or stun's'ls, that are considered quite rare on modern ships with sails. The extra sails are set along the edge of the square topsail and mainsail, that are supported by extra spars called stun's'ls booms. The Pride II had been owned by the residents of the state and run by the Pride of Baltimore, Inc. which was a nonprofit, but in 2010, it would be transferred to the ship's nonprofit operator. The vessel is considered to be somewhat of a copy of a Baltimore clipper privateer and her main mission is to educate the public about the state's maritime history, commerce and traditions; and is the world's most traveled historic tall ship. She is 157 feet long, with a 26 foot beam, and weighs a bit over 185 tons. Since she was commissioned, this vessel has logged almost 200,000 miles and visited more than 200 ports in 40 countries in North, South and Central America, Asia and Europe.

Old United States ArsenalOld United States Arsenal Pikesville, Maryland
The Old United States Arsenal was constructed in 1816, sometime after the end of the War of 1812, to become an arsenal, it would be moved to a safer place beyond Baltimore, Maryland, and it would be used during the Civil War and then, eventually become a Confederate home. It would become the property of the state in 1935 and is located in Pikesville, that is part of Baltimore county.  In 1853, Campbell Morfit would start a laboratory at the arsenal to test gun metals, and later, he and James Booth would write a book about gun metal for the Ordnance Department of the United States Army. Confederate soldiers would live there both during and after the Civil War, until the Army left the arsenal in 1879, although the Confederate veterans would still use it as a home from 1888 until 1932. The state would acquire it in 1935, and later headquarter the state police there. Since 1950, the Maryland state police used the old arsenal, and eventually it would be converted into the state police museum.

Emerson Bromo-Seltzer TowerEmerson Bromo-Seltzer Tower Baltimore, Maryland
The Emerson Bromo-Seltzer Tower was built in 1911 in Baltimore, Maryland, designed by Joseph Evans Sperry and constructed by Bromo-Seltzer inventor, Captain Isaac E. Emerson. It would become the tallest structure in the city from 1911 until 1923. The tower's design and original factory structure at its bottom, would be inspired by the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, Italy, that had been viewed by Emerson when he toured Europe in 1900. The factory would eventually be replaced by a firehouse, with an outstanding feature in the four clocks that adorn the tower on all of its sides. The clock faces have been inscribed with the letters, B-R-O-M-O S-E-L-T-Z-E-R, with the Roman numeral numbers somewhat smaller and less prominent. The tower rises 288 plus feet, and had a 51 foot tall Bromo-Seltzer bottle, that glowed blue and rotated. The bottle had to be removed because of structural concerns in 1936. It would be completely abandoned in 2002, and in 2007, the Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts would start restoration to convert the structure into 33 artists' studios, and in 1973, the Baltimore Fire Department's Steadham Fire Station would be located at its base. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
