La Pointe-Krebs House

La Pointe-Krebs House in Pascagoula Located in the coastal city of Pascagoula, La Pointe-Krebs House is the oldest Spanish Colonial structure on the entire Gulf of Mexico. It is also the oldest standing structure in the state of Mississippi. The house preserves the history of Mississippi’s early settlement. It was built between 1772 and 1780 with two rooms; later in 1820 a third room was added. The house was originally built by Joseph Simon de la Pointe who was French. The French handed over the control of the area to the British in 1763. The Spanish troops took over the control in 1779. The house is placed on the shore of the Krebs Lake. It is also called the Old Spanish Fort even though it was never really a fort. There is a cotton gin named Krebs cotton gin located on the east side of La Pointe-Krebs. The first account of the Hugo Krebs’ cotton gin was documented in 1772 by Bernard Romans, a British who had mentioned of finding Krebs’ efficient gin. Since Krebs was suspicious of the British he dismantled the gin to prevent anyone from copying his design. However, he had never patented the design of the gin. The Krebs Cemetery sits on the banks overlooking the Krebs Lake. As you walk around the shore of the Krebs Lake, you will come across Fishermen catching a variety of fishes including blue catfish, sucker and bluegill. You can also take a boat ride on the Krebs Lake, a continuance of the Pascagoula River. The Pascagoula River includes one of the most well-preserved ecosystems in the United States. La Pointe-Krebs House was previously operated by the Jackson County Historical Society. But since Hurricane Katrina the house was purchased by the City of Pascagoula and in the process of being renovated.
