Things to do in Richmond

BC Museum of Mining Britannia Mining Museum Richmond, British Columbia, Canada
The BC Mining Museum has become the Britannia Mine Museum, where in the last century, the mine would produce gold, zinc and copper but today provides millions of visitors with a first hand look at one of the most amazing mines in Canada that would enjoy a 14.7 million dollar transformation. You'll board a train, supplied with excellent knowledgeable interpreters, to take you and your family on a journey into the past, when old time drills are fired up and one of the most enjoyable trips you have ever experienced begins. Outside the mine, there are many outstanding films, displays, hands-on activities and exhibits have been created to help you learn and perhaps understand what the times and the people that mined this cavern endured. There is even a spot for you to try your hand at panning gold, and you keep whatever nuggets you find. This mine had been the British Empire's biggest copper mine, and is now one of the biggest attractions in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada. The museum was established in 1971 so that it could preserve the materials and social history of mining in British Columbia, along with providing the community and visitors about mining. The staff and board are devoted to providing visitors, regardless of where they are from, with the most up-to-date information about mining and this mine in particular, creating a fun and entertaining experience for all. The story of the mine brings up visions of the past, present and future possibilities of mining and this mine, although it has become a fabulous attraction that continues to entice and welcome visitors from around the globe and Canada. The real story behind the mine's discovery is as interesting as it is amazing, beginning in 1888, when Doctor Alexander Forbes would come to Vancouver to make his fortune, and then met a prospector named Granger that showed him some excellent and promising rock samples of ore. While hunting at Howe Sound, the good doctor shot at a buck deer, whose hooves revealed some unique mineralized material underneath the moss, the would lead to the discovery of one of the biggest deposits of copper in the world. The rest is history and will keep you enthralled for the entire day.

The Butchart GardensButchart Gardens Richmond, British Columbia, Canada
Butchart Gardens in Brentwood Bay, British Columbia, Canada is close to Victoria, on Vancouver Island, with a beautiful bouquet of flowering showcase gardens that welcome over one million visitors each year. Robert Pim Butchart would start making Portland cement near his hometown of Owen Sound, Ontario, Canada in 1888, and eventually, he and his wife, Jennie, would travel to the west coast of Canada for the excellent limestone deposits that were the main ingredient to cement. They began constructing their new home by his quarry on Tod Inlet, at the southern edge of Saanich Peninsula on Vancouver Island in 1904; and in 1907, Isaburo Kishida of Yokohama, arrived in the Victoria, after being requested by his son, to come and construct a tea garden for Esquimalt Gorge Park, at the age of 65. This garden would become very popular and famous, with many well known and well-to-do people coming there to enjoy and marvel at the beauty, including one Jennie Butchart, and all these folks wanted Kishida to come and visit them to create Japanese gardens for them. He would go back to Japan in 1912 after finishing the numerous gardens he had been commissioned to create. However, in 1909, the limestone quarry would be played out and Jennie decided to make a sunken garden from its remains, that would be finished in 1921. The Butcharts would welcome many visitors to their home, now called "Benvenuto", which means welcome in Italian and in 1936, the couple would replace their tennis courts with an Italian garden, and in 1929, they replaced their kitchen garden with a big rose garden designed by Butler Sturtevant from Seattle and Samuel Maclure, that had been the consultant to their exciting and beautiful gardens, would showcase the magnificent aesthetic styles of the English arts and crafts movement. They gave the gardens to their grandson, Ian Ross, in 1939, on his 21st birthday, and he would become involved in the gardens' operations and promotion until he passed on some 58 years later. During 1953, many miles of underground lighting would be installed to give night lighting, and to mark the 50th anniversary of the gardens. In 1964, the constantly evolving Ross Fountain would be installed in the lower reservoir to celebrate their 60th anniversary, and in 1994, the government would give them their own coat of arms. In 2004, two 30 foot totem poles would be added, celebrating their 100th anniversary and listing the property on the national historic site list.
