Lyndon Baines Johnson Library & Museum
The Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in Austin, Texas contains 45 million pages of historical documents that houses the papers of the Johnson administration and those of his close associates and other people. It was dedicated in 1971, with Johnson and then President Richard M. Nixon, sitting next to the LBJ School of Public Affairs on a 14 acre campus that is run by the government and not affiliated with the University of Texas at Austin. The top floor contains a seven-eighths scale copy of the Oval Office and decorated like it had been during Lyndon's presidency. Some of the exhibits in the museum include, the timeline of Lyndon's life and times, Lady Bird's biography, a film about his presidency, another film about his voting rights speech, an essay about his continuing legacy and another about the LBJ that was hidden from the public and another film about his life as told by Harry Middleton, a former director of the museum. The featured display is called Left to Right: Radical Movements of the 1960s, which opens in April of 2011 and ends in January of 2012. This should be a very interesting exhibit, since the 60s was one of the most tumultuous decade of the century, for this country and its citizens, although the world wars were quite different, these horrendous events involved not only every single American in this great nation, but also a large part of the world. The 60s, was a whole nother thing, with just about every single group in the nation fighting, struggling to make itself known and accepted into the mainstream of American life. There were clashes between the generations, the genders, the races, the political beliefs and cultural values that were unique from any other decade in the history of this country. It was a decade of surprises, dreams, happiness and sadness; it was so unique that it is really indescribable by any one person, and Lyndon Johnson would be the President of the United States during that period, which should explain some of the differences that occurred. Lyndon was one of those individuals that would be more prone to understand the generational differences, but no one was ready for the Black Panthers or the bra burning that affected so many people in this country, not to even forget about the infamous Weathermen. It was a historical moment and Lyndon did his best to help as many people as he could and when he realized that it was beyond his control or help, he would decide not to continue in office, although records and information will say otherwise. You had to be there, the be on the sidelines, watching it all unfold on the television, perhaps the period also that would help define the future of that venue. Much like the computer will define much of the last decade of the 20th century.

William Owen House Complex
The William M. Owen complex in Round Rock, Texas is the earliest settled site in the city that would get its first structure, a one-story structure constructed of stone, in 1853, and had originally held the first merchantile store and the first permanent post office in the city. Both of those businesses would be run by Thomas C. Oatts, constructed on the pioneer road from Austin to Georgetown and part of the city's early development. That road would eventually grow to become the Chisholm Trail that brought cattle in and out of the region. In 1870, the two story house would be constructed and become the residence of Dr. William M. Owen, a well known local doctor and businessman.  William Mitchell Owen would practice for half a century in the region, and became quite an interesting and outstanding citizen of the city, who was well cared for and a highly respected man. Dr. Owen would become a state representative for the area, serving his constituents with honesty, dignity and great energy. His obituary was quite long, a wonderful epitaph to a life well spent and enjoyed.

Nelson-Crier House
The Nelson-Crier House is located in Round Rock, Texas, just outside of Austin, and in 1854, Andrew J. and Hedwig Nelson of Sweden would arrive here to start a new life. Nelson was a hard working man and before too long, he would become a successful businessman and very well-to-do. His widow and children would have the house constructed by Page Brothers, Austin architects during 1895 to 1900. One of their sons, Thomas Edward Nelson and his wife, commissioned Dallas architect, Wilson McClure to reconstruct their Victorian style façade into a classical revival in 1931, and altogether, the house would have three generations of the Nelson family living there. Eugene N. and Jean Crier Goodrich would purchase the house in 1961, and restore it to its former condition, calling it, Woodbine. This area would see many Swedish immigrants coming here to settle during that period, and by the time the Civil War started, there something like 153 Swedish residents living in Round Rock. There is a story about one group of Swedes arriving and being met by a black man that spoke perfect Swedish, since he had been adopted by one of the families living in town. They asked him if he really was Swedish and he replied that he was, in their tongue, and further stated that after a few summers in the hot Texas sun, they too would be about as black as he was.

A. J. and Carolina Anderson House
The Anderson house was constructed in 1908-1909 for a family of Swedish immigrants named Anders Johann Anderson, sometime after the passing of his first wife, Edla Maria. When it was finished, Anders and his two daughters would move into the house from their farm that was only two miles to the south of Round Rock, Texas. Anders would marry Carolina Lindquist in 1912, and the house would remain in the Anderson family until 1963. It is a folk Victorian style house, with outstanding details that include fishscale shingles and classical columns, that showcase the prosperity and status of a merchantile center for Swedish families during the early 20th century. The house is a Texas Historic Landmark now and remains a lovely house that is well worth visiting to learn more about the lifestyle of these hardy folk during the early 20th century in rural Texas.

Andrew J. Palm House
The Andrew J. Palm House in Round Rock, Texas was constructed in 1873, after A. J., his brothers and mother arrived here in 1853, from Sweden. The family would settle land about three miles north of Round Rock in Palm Valley, where he had the house built. A. J. had bought the land from another Swedish immigrant, S. M. Swenson. Palm would then begin hauling cypress and pine from Austin to this land to construct his house. Once constructed, he and his wife, Carolina, would raise their eight children and enjoy the region quite well. In 1976, the house would be moved to its present location in Round Rock. The house has become a museum, and has been a Texas historic landmark since 1976, with adjacent visitor's center. One of their sons, Andrew, would become a farmer and rancher that would assist other Swedish families in coming to the region. The interior contains a large central hall, pioneer kitchen, high-ceilinged Victorian parlor and many excellent furnishings from that period.
