Things to do in Silver Spring

  • Jesup Blair Park and Blair HouseJesup Blair Park and House Silver Spring, Maryland
The Jesup Blair Park is a 14.5 acre city park located in Silver Spring, Maryland that contains numerous fields, that includes a football/soccer field, playground, tennis court and basketball courts. The park was obtained by the Maryland-National Park and Planning Commission over the years, 1933 to 1995 in small plots. The Blair House sits inside the park, and this magnificent mansion was constructed in the 1850 era to be a summer house. It incorporates Greek revival and Federal architectural styles, that include a hipped roof with cupola, pilasters, molded architrave, wooden quoin blocks and the front door that is framed with sidelights and a transom. It has been used for many civic events and activities since it was donated to the state in 1933, by Violet Blair Janin, and restored in 1990 so that transient single parent families could stay there. The Blair House was the scene of fierce fighting in the Civil War, when Confederate troops came down Georgia Avenue to attack Fort Stevens in Washington, D.C. in 1864. General Jubal Early had around 20,000 southern soldiers in that group as they came, using the grounds to camp out both on the U.S. Postmaster General Montgomery Blair's summer home, Falklands and Mary Blair's summer home, the Moorings, which was later changed to the Jesup Blair House in Jesup Blair Park. The Confederates had just finished fighting in a bloody and terrible battle at Monocacy two days before, and needed the rest they found here. It wasn't called Silver Spring back then, but Sligo, and while they rested up from the tough trip, General Frank Wheaton brought his union troops up from Petersburg, Virginia. As the bombs burst bright in the morning air, the troops came together and fought, hard and bloody, until the dead were littered around the area. In the Woodside Community, which had been part of the Wilson farm, the cannon balls and artillery shells were found throughout the woods. Richard Wilson was a southern sympathist and his farmhouse, that still stands today, was the headquarters for Early's second in command, John C. Breckenridge, who had been a Vice President before the war. John Wilson was for the north, and it was the union soldiers that damaged their farm and killed their father. By the time the battle was over, the Falklands was only a burned out ruins, and bodies lay everywhere. The casualties were in the hundreds, and the Sligo Post Office had been turned into a Confederate hospital, with the dead being buried in the Grace Episcopal Church cemetery, where Pastor James Avirett, who had been a chaplain with the C.S.A. for Ashby's Cavalry; was the presiding priest. In 1896, a monument was placed in the cemetery for the fallen Confederate soldiers, and local citizens renamed Leesboro after General Wheaton.

  • Silver Spring B & O Railroad Station
The Silver Spring, Maryland, Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Station is one of the historic buildings that are located in the city, designed in the Colonial Revival architectural style and constructed using the standard plans for all B & O stations in the mid 1940s. The original furniture still waits for travelers there, as well as the recessed fluorescent lighting fixtures; with the Eastbound waiting room that was restored in the 1970s, when more tracks had to be laid for the Washington Metro, and a tunnel was built that connected the two structures together underneath the tracks. The station was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000, since a new one had been built about a quarter mile away, next to the Silver Spring Metro Station. Made of brick, in 1945, the westbound depot is owned by the Montgomery Preservation, Inc., containing many wonderful railroading artifacts, and the former baggage area is leased for commercial ventures. It is also the sole building that is listed on the National Register in downtown Silver Spring. The new station, built in 1945, was put on top of the old foundation to preserve materials that might be used in the second W.W. In 1997, an automobile slammed into the Georgia Avenue entrance, destroying the wooden door and side light windows, with the original limestone pilaster and brickwork being terribly damaged. Almost certain to be demolished, the Montgomery Preservation, Inc. saved the station for future generations to see what it was like to board trains during the era of the second World War. It is used for the visitors center and a historical museum for the Metro Branch Hiker-Biker Trail.

  • Acorn Park
Acorn Park is less than a quarter acre urban park in Silver Spring, Maryland, that features an acorn shaped gazebo and artificial grotto. It is of great historical importance, since the site is thought to be the location of the original mica flecked spring that influenced Francis Preston Blair to buy a large tract of land and name his home, Silver Spring, in 1840. The gazebo was built in 1842, by Benjamin C. King, with Blair's son-in-law, Samuel Phillips Lee, having the grotto constructed in 1894, where the spring was located. There was a statue of a Greek nymph, with the land being bought by the Maryland-National Capital Park Planning Commission in 1942, to preserve the important park, and had it rejuvenated in 1955. A small lot was later bought by the commission to make it a .12 acre tract.

  • Fort StevensFort Stevens Silver Spring, Maryland
The Battle for Fort Stevens was fought in July, 1864, in the area northwest of Washington, D.C., and part of the Valley Campaigns of 1864, between Confederate Lt. General Jubal A. Early and Maj. General Alexander McCook. The move caused some concern in the government, but reinforcements under Maj. General Horatio G. Wright and the determined defenses at the fort, was enough for the Confederate general to leave after only 2 days of skirmishes; all under the watchful eye of the President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. During June of that year, General Lee sent word to Early to take the Second Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia, which had been bivouacked around Richmond and clear the union troops out of the Shenandoah Valley, and if he could continue to invade Maryland, create havoc with the B & O railroad, and even go so far as to threaten the capital. Lee hoped that this move would cause General Grant to take his troops that were trying to take the Confederate capital, and go to Washington's aid. The southern army had no problems making the union troops under Maj General David Hunter, leave the valley, and they headed towards Maryland. Maj. General James B. Ricketts and Maj. General Lew Wallace left the Richmond area to thwart the invasion at the Battle of Monocacy. This battle lasted around 8 hours, and the Confederate troops were able to drive off the union troops and head to the capital. Early made it to Silver Spring about noon on the 11th of July, and because his men were exhausted from the quick march and hard battle, he decided to wait until the next day to begin the fight. When Early had made it into Maryland, General Grant sent VI Corps and XIX Corps to stop them, under the leadership of Wright. A steamer was carrying his troops to Washington, and they too arrived in the southeast part of Washington around noon on the 11th. Washington was becoming a storehouse of generals about this time, with McCook being one of those generals who had lost their command due to various circumstance. He had been leading the union troops at the Battle of Chickamauga and was taken off, but now he was put in charge of defending the capital, which already had General Christopher Columbus Augur, who was in command of the Department of Washington, plus Maj. General Henry W. Halleck, Maj. General Quincy A. Gillmore, as well as the generals coming here to help. The battle was a fierce one, confusing at times, but a story that should be read and understood. Fort Stevens is managed by the National Park Service, and run by the Rock Creek Park. There were some momentous moments here, the fact that President Lincoln and his wife came to the front lines during the night, and a surgeon standing next to the President was wounded by a stray bullet. Also, Maj. General John C. Breckenridge was a former U.S. vice president and had run against Lincoln in the election; now they faced each other across the battlefield, yet neither knew it then. Breckenridge was a cousin of Mary Todd and had been one of her suitors. This was the only time in history, of the United States, that a sitting President had been under fire.

  •  Chevy Chase Historical Society
Chevy Chase, Maryland is not the homestead of the actor Chevy Chase, but a town that traces its history back to the medieval days in England, along the border with Scotland, in an area called Cheviot Hills; which were great hunting grounds for both the Scots and English. Many think that this is where the name came from since the hunting grounds were also called chaces; or that it could be from the French word chevauchee, which had to do with horseback border raids between the two countries. It was in 1388, that the two groups met, in a battle that was later immortalized by well known ballads about the Battle of Otterbourne and Chevy Chase. Centuries later, in an area around the future site of the nation's capital, in 1725, Colonel Joseph Belt acquired 560 acres of land and called it Cheivy Chace. It was all farming land until the end of the 19th century, when it blossomed into the center of a streetcar suburb that kept the name and continued to grow into the city it is today. Around this time, two entrepreneurs, William Stewart and Francis G. Newlands, began to create a home suburb for Washington, when railroads and electric streetcars enabled workers to live in one area and work in another. Newlands was the apparent heir to the Comstock Lode money, and a future Nevada representative to both houses of Congress. Stewart was a U.S. senator from Nevada, and together, they purchased thousands of acres of land that would eventually become Connecticut Avenue. The land was then transferred to the Chevy Chase Land Company, which then extended their holdings along the avenue, creating a man made lake and amusement park, hoping to bring in new residents to buy their lots. They further enhanced the avenue with a new streetcar line and the dreams bloomed. These two men dreamed of a city where the stately homes would sit along tree lined streets, complete with sidewalks and parks, businesses would be on the outskirts, and no alleys to remind anyone of the crowded cities.  The forward thinking men gave the city every possible convenience, that included churches, schools, water and electricity, recreational areas and it was all connected to the capital by the streetcar service. This service grew in leaps and bounds, becoming very important to all the residents, from the workers going into and out of the capital to the children that rode on the trolleys to and from their schools. The "skipper" as the drivers were so called, would even bring groceries and other supplies to homes along their route, and citizens from the capital and Chevy Chase would go to the lake on the weekends to picnic, ride the carousel, fish and dance to the marvelous music of John Philip Sousa and Eubie Blake. Even today, the city retains its quaint charm, and the old farming roads are much more heavily traveled, as the Chevy Chase Lake now sits in a smaller patch of woods, that still delight and entice folks to come here on their days off.

  • National Museum of Language
In January of 1971, the NSA, National Security Agency, linguists created a display called "Language, Its Infinite Variety". And within two months, the idea of a local museum of language was born, while the NSA put the exhibit on display for the area's school children, with over a thousand coming to see the display at the Greenbelt Armory, from 26 different high schools. Some of those that helped in the creation of the exhibit, continue to meet throughout the years to build a concept and study feasibility about the museum, preparing outlines of the displays and see if there was any opportunity for the Smithsonian Institute to sponsor it. In the fall of 1985, the group stops meeting, because they find out that they can't make the exhibits. However, in 1997, an organizing committee is created, using the reviews and concepts of the 1983 group to start an independent national museum of language, thereby asking those in the language community to join in the work of the committee and in December of that year, the National Museum of Language is born in College Park, Maryland. The museum continues to get established and grow, gaining notoriety as it progresses, meeting representatives of the National Foreign Language Center, then the British World of Language and others. Organizations like the Alabama Association of Foreign Language Teachers join the group, and the growth and recognition continue to grow. The mission for the museum is to enhance the understanding of every aspect of language in contemporary affairs, history and the future. Some of the current exhibits include; Arabic calligraphy and calligrams, American Sign Language, basics of Chinese calligraphy, Cherokee syllabary, Esperanto is an international language that is not associated with any group or ethnicity, but an egalitarian communication on a world scale, Ge'ez is an ancient Ethiopic script in Prince George's County, Maryland, Japanese writing system, Latin, the universal declaration of linguistic rights, Vietnamese writing and the docent guide.

  • George Meany Memorial ArchivesGeorge Meany Memorial Archives Silver Spring, Maryland
In 1980, the AFL-CIO, also called the American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations, created the George Meany Memorial Archives to honor their first president and give future generations an idea of the historical records and accomplishments of the organization. The archives were moved in 1987 to the George Meany Center for Labor Studies set on a 47 acre site in Silver Spring, Maryland. It is an educational institution for the representatives, staff and labor officers of the AFL-CIO affiliates. The permanent display of George Meany: Builder of Labor's House, 1894-1980, spans the life of the man and his work, that occurred inside and outside of the movement, incorporating artifacts, photographs and audio-visual excerpts that show his love and ties to the community, labor, family, political and religious leaders and international labor groups. In 2005, the center offered areas of the building to house exhibits that showcased the heritage of workers and resources that would expedite the exploration of the heritage. There is an online exhibit that details the life of A. Philip Randolph, 1889-1979, a civil rights activist and trade unionist. The archives contain the records of the AFL-CIO, that date from 1881 when it was the American Federation of Labor, and also include the founding of the AFL-CIO, as well as 20th century political and social issues. Since the main organization is a national federation of unions, the history shows the policies, campaigns, legislative efforts and policies of the organization, but not the individual unions or their documents that pertain to the rank and file members.

  • National Capital Trolley Museum
The National Capital Trolley Museum is a non-profit that uses historic trolleys for the public on a regular basis and is located in Colesville, Maryland. The NCTM was incorporated in 1959, and after starting out slowly, was able to get assistance from a group in Baltimore, and find its first home at the Robert E. Lee Park in Lake Roland, in Baltimore, Maryland. Unfortunately, the home's neighbors didn't care much for the idea, and the collection was divided in 1966, moving the National Capital Trolley Museum to suburban Washington, D. C. and the remainder going to a newly formed Baltimore Streetcar Museum. Originally, the plan was to use streetcars that were owned by the DC Transit, but it wasn't until 1970, that O. Roy Chalk, the president of the company, donated any historical cars. So, in the meantime, the museum used the European trams and a car from Johnstown, Pennsylvania to handle the business. The first streetcar ran in October 1969, and it has continued using its small three quarter mile track since then. It had a number of unfortunate problems, that destroyed some of the collection; like the 1970, air-conditioned PCC car 1512, also called the Silver Sightseer, which was badly damaged by arsonists and finally scrapped. Cars 1053 and 766, were messed up in a collision in 1988, and the worst nightmare that could happen to any museum occurred in 2003, when one of the two carbarns burned down and 8 marvelous streetcars, half of its operating fleet, and one third of its collection were completely destroyed. No one ever found out what happened, they just went on with their work. There are many wonderful programs that the museum offers, and children really enjoy these excursions. The museum has owned every example of Washington streetcar at one time or another, and the collection contains streetcars from New York City, Berlin, Vienna, Graz, Toronto, Dusseldorf, Johnstown, Pa. and the Hague.

  • Sandy Spring MuseumSandy Spring Museum Maryland
The Sandy Spring Museum was started in 1981, when the area was going through a rapid growth period in people and personalities. Originally a rural country of farms, winding roads and pasturelands, the region was becoming a bedroom community with four intersections and wealthier commuters. A museum was needed to preserve the past and its magnificent antiquities, both for the people who lived here all their lives and those that were newly arrived and not sure of what they were doing. The area is rich in history that pertains to social reform, education, cultural achievements, inventions and progressive farming techniques. At the museum, you can and will share in the past of this beautiful community, and all the marvelous relics from those times. Given the opportunity to go back in time, you have the means to arrive in the late 1800s into the old Sandy Spring, with their old dirt roads and turnpikes, which were called pike blocks that would not let you and your horse and buggy go by until you had paid a penny or two, then it was turned to allow passage; thus, it became known as a turnpike. Over 100 houses from that era are still standing today, a proud testament to the skill and quality of work that these pioneers achieved, without regard to color, race, ethnic background or religion; just hard working Americans joining together to create a better place for their families to grow and prosper. The town was settled in the 1720s by the Religious Society of Friends, or Quakers, that created a peaceful and industrious example that characterized the area, that by the mid 20th century had turned into a small farming community and commercial center. The community gave to the state as well as to their own town, with wonderful improvements to the religious, economic, cultural, social, and political history of their state and town, building churches and schools, starting insurance companies and banks, improved farming techniques, built marvelous homes and patented new products. These good citizens, not all who were Quakers, built a community spirit with many clubs, that still meet today, where ideas could be exchanged about the political and social concerns they had, about horticulture and agriculture, family and women's issues and more. We are most fortunate that these wonderful folks kept good records of what transpired. In 1966, the last well known landmark in the town burned down, the Thomas F. Lansdale's Sherwood Roller Mill, although he was able to continue in a building close by until the 1980s. It was on this site that grain mills had stood for a century and a half, using steam, then diesel and finally electricity. The builder of the mills was B. Rush Roberts, who had come here from England and named the mill after his home there, Sherwood, and a school that sat across the road also was named Sherwood. When Tom Lansdale shut down the mills, he was finishing a family milling tradition that had been going on since the old Triadelphia mills and the milling roots of England. Some of the families that lived back then include Ashton druggist Joseph Wallace Bond and his wife Jessie, who had nine children and raised them all here. Another is Remus Hill, was a farm worker and Sharp Street Church trustee, and the Thomas' at Tanglewood that held regular gatherings for the town's folks.

  • National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration
NOAA, or the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is a scientific agency in the Department of Commerce that looks at the oceans and atmosphere in the world. It can warn of treacherous weather, guides the use and protection of the ocean and coastal waters, does research to improve the understanding and stewardship of the environment and charts the seas and the skies. Besides the civil employees, there are 300 uniformed service people that are the NOAA corps. The strategic vision is to keep citizens informed of the role of the oceans, atmosphere and coasts that make up the global ecosystem, and to assist them make the best economic and social decisions for that ecosystem. Their mission is to learn, understand and predict the various changes that occur in our environment and save, as well as manage, the marine and coastal resources to meet the needs of our country in regards to the social, environmental and economic systems in play. The agency has four distinct goals that it is guided by; with regards to activities that focus on weather, water, climate, commerce and transportation. The four main points include; the assurance that the sustainable use of resources and the balance of coastal and marine ecosystems are used and recognized for the natural and human components involved; to understand the changes in climate, that includes the global climate change, and more specifically the warming changes, the El Nino effect, and that America can and will plan and respond effectively; give data and forecasts for weather and water cycle phenomenon that include floods, storms and droughts; and give weather, ecosystems and climate info so that individual and commercial transportation is safe, efficient and environmentally strong. NOAA plays numerous roles in society, the benefits which will provide for the entire global community; and these include; a supplier of environmental information; provider of environmental stewardship services and a leader in applied scientific research. The agency was started in 1970, when then President Richard Nixon proposed a new agency that would serve the national need for better protection of life and property from the natural hazards that occur every year. The outcome was the formation of this agency that grew from the three existing agencies that had been part of the government for years; the U.S. Coast and Geodectic Survey that started in 1807, the weather bureau that started in 1870 and the Bureau of Commercial Fisheries that started in 1871.  Today, one of the biggest worries of the agency, and the entire world is the growing concerns about global warming. Much has been said, discussed and tried, but the world is still too big for it to come together for common good. With an arctic storm covering most of the eastern coast of the United States, and even causing the worst freezes in Florida's history, and most of the rest of the east coast, it is difficult to understand the severity of this problem. After the recent world meetings that were held in Europe, it is even more difficult to decide who should pay what for any improvements in the global climate changes. There are many who doubt that this is a real problem, but history has a way of making sure that everyone knows how and why these events have occurred and what the outcome will be.

  • Holy Land of America - Catacombs ReplicaThe Holy Land of America - Catacombs Replica Maryland
Hidden in the suburbs of Washington, D. C., the Holy Land replica is located under the Mount St. Sepulcher in Washington, and home to a Franciscan monastery for over 112 years. The Memorial Church of the Holy Sepulcher contains many beautiful replicas of Jesus' tomb and other Holy sites. Over 25,000 people come here every year to see the shrines and monuments that are representative of the originals in the Holy Land of Israel. The many marvelous relics can be identified with the life of Jesus Christ, and has impressed more visitors than the National Cathedral that is across town. The order has just finished celebrating its 800th anniversary, which was started by St. Francis of Assisi in 1209 in Rome. The monks strive to live the Gospel as much as they humanly can, with a simple life, serving the needs of others and having no possessions at all. There have been hundreds of the friars coming to the monastery through the years, many times in preparation for the service they might do for the Catholic Church's chief custodians of the holiest sites. All Good Friday contributions are sent here from every Catholic church in the nation before it is sent to the Vatican which then distributes the money for support of the Franciscans work. In the real Holy Land, the friars try to foster peace and reconciliation among the Jews, Muslims and other religious groups that live in Jerusalem, and where all have a vested and unchangeable adoration for the religious site that belongs to all. Considered to be one of the main supply lines for the Holy Land duties, the church here recruits, trains and supports the needs of the friars in regards to their emotions, both spiritually and financially. The church is full of marvelous works and scaled replicas of the many sites in the Holy Land. In 1897, Father Godfrey Schilling bought an old farm to create the monastery and church, after just coming back here from a visit to the Holy Land; and he wanted Americans to see the wonderful works of art and history that he saw in Israel and these people most likely would never see. Aristide Leonori, an architect, was brought in to design the church, which was made in the shape of a Crusader Cross of Jerusalem, incorporating the Byzantine style with Roman Italianate elements. Leonori went to the Holy Land to get measurements and photos of these magnificent sites, so they could be reproduced in this church. Many artists were induced into making the fantastic paintings, mosaics, statues and stained glass that fill the walls and altars. The details are spectacular and an unbelievable copy, like the Altar of Cavalry that is set up high enough in the church to depict the height of Mount Calvary. The tour guides explain that the body of Christ was taken down and carried to a tomb across the church that measures the same distance that the body was taken down from the cross in Jerusalem and carried into His final resting place. They even were able to get stone from the real tomb in Jerusalem for the replica. In the basement, you will see replicas of the shrine at Nazareth that was dedicated to the Annunciation, when Mary learned that she would give birth to the son of God, and the nativity scene in Bethlehem where the child was wrapped in swaddling clothes and laying in a manger. The Franciscans have replicated the catacombs found in Rome, with altars that contain the actual remains of St. Benignus, a 2nd century martyr put to death by the Roman emperor, as well as the body of St. Innocent, a child martyr, that show how the early Christians were persecuted. The gardens are full of beautiful roses and many replicas that include the garden of Gethsemane, the tomb of the Virgin Mary, and the Portiuncula Chapel that St. Francis restored.

It belongs to the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League, playing their home games at the Montgomery Blair Baseball Stadium. The Thunderbolts were playing in the Clark Griffith League from 2000 to 2004, and the next year joined the CRCBL, sharing the league championship with the Bethesda Big Train; and winning the league championship in 2006. At the closing of the 2009 season, 8 members of the Thunderbolts were playing major league ball; and these included Johathan Papelbon, a right handed pitcher that just finished his fifth year with the Boston Red Sox, having a record of 1-1, 38 saves, which was 6th in the league, and a fantastic ERA of 1.85 during 68 innings of pitching. He was the winning pitcher of the All Star game in 2009 for the MLB. Southpaw Brett Cecil went to the Toronto Blue Jays at the start of the 2009 season, making his major league debut against the Cleveland Indians, pitching 6 innings and giving up two runs, one of which was earned. Toronto won the game, but Brett got a no decision; making his next performance that much sweeter, when he started against the Oakland A's and pitching a fantastic scoreless 8 innings. Later that month, he was sent back the triple A team, but since the rest of the Jays' pitchers had various injuries, he was called back in June; then pitching against the Washington Nationals going 7 innings with no decision. He was in the rotation for the rest of the season, and ended up with 7-4, in 17 starts, 93.3 innings pitched and an ERA of 5.3. The rest of the players went to the minors and we look forward to seeing them in the majors next year. The use of wooden bats is what makes a ball player great, since the aluminum bats of today can't be splintered or broken, and are definitely lighter than the wooden; but the wood develops a great hitter. That extra weight strengthens the shoulders, wrists and forearms to put that ball into the next city. Which is the preferred bat is up to the individual, but for the old-timers, it will always be the wood; where you can hear the crack of the bat and know that puppy is headed for the wall.
