Things to do in Simi Valley

Ronald Reagan Presidential Library Ronald Reagan Presidential Library Simi Valley, California
The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Center for Public Affairs is where the 40th President of the United States lies, located in Simi Valley, California, some 40 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles and is the biggest of the twelve Federally funded presidential libraries, occupying 153,000 square feet. It would lose that distinction when the William J. Clinton Presidential Library opened in Little Rock, Arkansas in 2004, but after opening the 90,000 square foot Air Force One pavilion in 2005, the Reagan library would recapture the title of being the biggest. Just as all the presidential libraries since FDR, the Reagan would be constructed using only private donations, and this totaled, $60 million. During 2007, it would be the second most visited library after the Lyndon Johnson library in Texas. The museum showcases changing temporary displays, with a permanent exhibit that spans Reagan's life, and starts with his childhood in Dixon, Illinois, following his life in films and military service, marriage to Nancy Davis Reagan and his political career. It houses a 1965 Ford Mustang that had been used by Ronald during his first gubernatorial campaign, and the desk he used as governor. The "Citizen Governor" gallery shows footage of Reagan's 1964 "A Time for Choosing" speech and features highlights from his eight years as the governor of California. There is a full scale copy of the Oval Office, that is usually shown in all the libraries of presidents, and is one of the most significant features there. The splendid hilltop grounds offer expansive views of the region, with a recreated part of the White House lawn, a piece of the Berlin Wall and an F-14 Tomcat. The Air Force One Pavilion showcases a permanent exhibit of the Boeing 707 plane that had been used as Air Force One during his presidency, and the plane, SAM 27000 had been used by six other presidents during its active life from 1973 to 2001.

Lost Canyon Golf ClubLost Canyon Golf Club Simi Valley, California
This fabulous golf course at Lost Canyon was designed by famed architect, Pete Dye and Champions Tour star and Masters Champion, Fred Couples, and is Ventura County's only 36 hole golf course. Two championship courses are offered, meandering through the Santa Susana Mountains, offering the golfer, the most magnificent views of the mountains and valleys, while enjoying a very exciting and challenging course. It is situated in Simi Valley, away from the hustle and bustle of the big city, with panoramic views that could draw your attention away from the task at hand. Carved out of the old oaks and valleys, a big part of the course lays in pristine condition, and two distinct and different course, named the Sky Course and the Shadow course, that just seem to flow along the canyon floor with spectacular views of the White Face Mountain. Both courses provide five sets of tees, so that whatever you experience is, you'll be able to slam that ball just like the other golfers in your group. Sky Course is 7,285 yards long and a par 72, at the farthest black tee, flowing along the ridgelines with outstanding views, and very challenging shots. The Shadow course is just a tad shorter at 7,005 yards, that is also a par 72, with some of the most gorgeous and natural surroundings and fairways in this country. Their practice facility has an excellent grass driving range to warm up with, and hit to nine differently elevated greens, where you can work on your long shots, chipping, pitching, lob shots and the hazardous bunker shots. They have a great practice green with three traps that provide a challenging warm up and a first class putting green by the clubhouse for that added sense of continuity. And speaking of the clubhouse, you are going to be surprised with this outstanding clubhouse, where you can start with a fresh cup of coffee, a glass of oj and a warm croissant and if you are there very early, a chance to see the sun rising over the mountain tops, giving you a startling start to the day. Lunch is offered, with western barbeque specials and a great seat on the terrace with a drink in hand and watch the sunset, even more beautiful than the morning's sunrise.

Strathearn Historical Park & Museum Strathearn Historical Park & Museum Simi Valley, California
The museum is an excellent way to learn more about Simi Valley and its wonderful history and the people that lived here, came here and began a new life, against great odds, but with determination, stamina and perseverance carved a place for their families and themselves, leaving a great legacy that is seen and showcased in the museum and its outstanding relics and artifacts. The valley had been originally occupied by the Chumash Indians, that lived here, in make shift houses and living off the land, using whatever they could catch or grow, utilizing every bit of it, without leaving mounds of trash and garbage. They could get all the fish and shellfish from the ocean nearby, enjoying the sage seeds, acorns off the oak trees and the small game animals that also shared the valley floor with them. They would build marvelous plank canoes, with just stone tools, and creating such seaworthy vessels that could travel to the Santa Barbara channel islands and back with different fish and game. At Burro Flats, there is a famous pictograph, inside a cave, that is now known to have been an astronomical observatory, where celebrations would be held during the winter solstice, and creating fine baskets and wooden bowls that looked as if they had been created using a modern lathe. Then, in the late 18th century, the Spanish arrived, and changed their lives forever. The original Simi adobe would be constructed around that time, with just some parts of its ruins still visible today, and showcased at the historical park. Again, the people that walked this valley would change in the mid 19th century, with the first Americans beginning to trickle in and soon, it would become a small community and eventually, a city. Now, centuries later, the Strathearn Historical park sits and houses many unique and exciting remembrances of those past days and the exciting people that lived it. The park has a visitor's center, the old Simi Valley library, a playhouse, the Memory garden, Saint Rose of Lima Church, a gazebo, the Strathearn house, the Wood ranch closed barn, the Simi adobe, the Wood Ranch open barn, the colony house, a pitting shed, the Strathearn garages, Hirschi monument, farming equipment and magnificent grounds.

Tapo Canyon Regional ParkTapo Canyon Regional Park Simi Valley, California
Tapo Canyon Regional Park sits in the heart of the rolling hills and canyons of the magnificent Santa Susana Mountains a bit north of Simi Valley, California, providing excellent spaces of beautiful scenery and wildlife for hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders and others, a rugged and natural park that has picnic facilities, an equestrian arena and even an RV campground that has room for sixteen vehicles, with full hook-ups. There are restrooms, water, fire rings, BBQ pits and a park host on the site, with dump station, showers and magnificent flora and fauna. The 210 acre park recently had a $900,000 renovation project completed, that gave better access to its trails for both hikers and horseback riders, after being damaged by a fire in 2003 and mudslide in 2005. There is parking for 100 vehicles, and a planned playground that will make this park more family friendly, with more amenities and outstanding opportunities to enjoy all that nature has to offer. The views that you can enjoy here are just magnificent and in the evenings, when the fire is glowing bright and warm, letting all the stress of the day fade away, you can look up at the night sky and see trillions of stars and formations that are dazzling, almost mesmerizing in its intensity, and if you don't live out in the country, where the nighttime skies are lit up with stars, lights and other wonders, then you can't really appreciate the beauty and magnificence of it all. But spend a night or two here, and take a day trip or too to Los Angeles, Santa Monica or Santa Barbara, when you come back, it is almost like being at home; taking away the heaviness of stress and too much thought. There might be one big problem for the tech savvy here, internet is not available, and since it is so far from anything that could resemble it, be sure to make all your plans before you arrive, so you'll know where and when to go.

Hummingbird Trail: Rocky Peak ParkHummingbird Trail Rocky Peak Park Simi Valley, California
The Rocky Peak Park includes 4,800 acres in the Santa Susana Mountains, between Chatsworth and Simi Valley, and includes the former 4400 acre Runkle Ranch that had been owned by Bob Hope, and stretches from the 118 freeway five miles north to Las Llajas Canyon and creates the most significant wildlife habitat area that is connected between the Simi Hill and Santa Susana Mountains. There are magnificent sandstone boulders, oak savannahs, ragged outcroppings and year round water sources that have made one of the most diverse natural habitats in the region for mammals, reptiles and a large number of birds. There are a number of trails, with different aspects of difficulty, like the Rocky Peak trail that is five miles long and is easy to moderate, or the Chumash trail that is shorter at three miles, but moderate hiking all the way. The best and easiest is the Hummingbird trail, constructed by the Rancho Simi and Park District, and heads up to the Rocky Peak trail, and during or after the rainy season, the trail has cascades that flow down the sandstone boulders and cliffs, to the parking area. As you hike up the trail, there is an elevation difference of a thousand feet, and could affect some folks in various ways, so just be aware and you should fair okay. As you do travel up the trail, there are numerous caves located around and under the trail, with the biggest cave being more than 100 feet long and if you are daring at the time, might be an unusual adventure. Going down the Rocky Peak trail, you'll come to the Rock house, a small room constructed underneath a rock overhang, and a good spot to rest and enjoy the scenery that is surrounding you in every direction, with exceptional views, wildlife and plants. Another way to travel these trails and quite a daring one at that is to take your mountain bike along and ride, stories abound that say it is a great and exciting experience, but be sure you are a good rider and bring plenty of water, no matter which mode of traveling you'll be doing, and if you bring your family, be extra careful.
