Things to do in Strongsville

    Fort HillFort Hill Strongsville, Ohio
Fort Hill State Memorial in Strongsville, Ohio is a marvelous nature preserve that contains one of the finest preserved Native American hilltop enclosures in North America, created by the Hopewell Indians that lived in the region from 100 BC to 500 AD, and built a one and a half mile long earthwork hilltop enclosure along with 2 ceremonial structures and a village in the Brush Creek Valley. It sits at the west edge of the Allegheny Plateau, just south of the glacial boundary, with a lovely hilly region containing an excellent diversity of flora, soils, bedrock and fauna, with 11 miles of trails inside the 1200 acre preserve, with numerous picnicking areas. The park has a interesting and exciting museum that showcases the prehistoric people that lived in the area as well as information about the natural history of the region. It was constructed in 1968 and then rejuvenated in 2003, open on the weekends without charges. The earthworks are an ancient earthen walled enclosure that occupies the top of a big flat topped ridge, with a circumference of a mile and a half, although interrupted by 33 gateways, and ranges from 6 to 15 feet in height. It averages about thirty feet at its base and includes about forty-eight acres, constructed along the natural contours of the hill and is bordered on the interior by a good sized ditch. It is believed that it wasn't really a fort at all, but a ceremonial gathering place, and the archaeological excavations have discovered that it was constructed about 2,000 year ago by Native Americans that belonged to a group of Indians that are known as the Hopewell Culture, called so because of the surname of the European owner of an early excavation site in Chillicothe, Ohio; although their real name and language has been lost to history, but there are at least a dozen such mysterious hilltop enclosures found in the southern areas of Ohio. This old culture is known for it huge geometric earthwork complexes constructed on the state's floodplains, shaped in circles, squares and octagons, with the enclosures usually containing numerous burial and ceremonial mounds. More than two dozen of these mounds have been discovered in the state, by early archaeologists, in the southern and central regions of Ohio, but no where else in North America. Sadly, none of the enclosures are completely intact today, since the majority of the mounds were built on the state's rich floodplains that would become the state's most productive farmlands.

    Pomeroy HousePomeroy House Strongsville, Ohio
Today the old Pomeroy House is a splendid restaurant filled with history, mystery and hospitality that began in 1835, when Alanson Pomeroy arrived in Strongsville, Ohio and began to become active in the town's public affairs, first becoming a justice of the peace, a trustee of the town and became to be known as Judge Pomeroy. He was an enterprising young man and would become connected with the National City Bank of Cleveland that would eventually lead to his organizing the Bank of Berea. In 1847, he constructed this large mansion that he named simply the "Homestead", and now called Don's Pomeroy House. He would construct the general store located next door to the mansion, using the same type of architecture, with another business called the Patio being located next to that. He had his study in the wing room of the south side of the house, and it was linked to the general store by a diagonal walk; and the area surrounding his house and businesses would become known as the Public Square, and another of Alanson's interests would be the local Congregation church where he would become a leader in that as well. Many of the local folks that lived further out of the town, would often head to his house for an afternoon dinner, so that they could enjoy the second service held at the church and enjoy the wonderful hospitality of the Homestead. Lincoln and the Union had become popular with the citizens of Strongsville, and many of the townspeople would be abolitionists, including the Pomeroys. The Pomeroys belief in hospitality and equality would encourage them to set up the Homestead as a station of the Underground Railroad, and Harlan Pomeroy, one of the six children of the couple, would often describe the brief sightings of slaves that hid in the cellar when it was opened. Harlan would often watch his mother, Keziah, carrying trays of fresh steaming food, down the cellar stairs. The Underground Railroad had been a very secretive group, as was understandable, since nothing was ever written down or recorded, and naturally kept from the big ears of the children. Many years later, Harlan would tell a story that his father had told him, about how the slaves would be brought here from Oberlin, in the night, being hidden in a load of hay, and would be kept hidden in the Pomeroy House until they heard from Rocky River that the next boat leaving for Canada would be arriving soon.
