Things to do in Vandalia

Aullwood Audubon Center & Farm Aull Audubon Center & Farm Vandalia, Ohio
The Aullwood Audubon Center and farm is a natural land and educational farm, located in Montgomery County, in southwestern Ohio, ten miles from Dayton in the northwest direction near Vandalia, Ohio. Because of the huge warm and shallow ocean that lay over the region some 450 million years ago, and the subsequent glacial movements, the soil is rich and diverse, with large quantities of limestone, fossils and other rich nutrients, as well as creating a flat land around the area and huge boulders that can be seen outside the nature center. The richness of the soil would get the attention of John Aull, who came here in 1885 to work with his brothers as a traveling salesman for their company called Aull Brothers Paper and Box company. By 1918, he would be the president, as his older brother passed on and the other moved to California. By the next year, the company was employing 150 people and one of the first big businesses in Dayton, with the same building that they used for their business still standing in downtown. One day, as he was horseback riding along the countryside, he noticed and fell in love with a parcel of farmland just outside Little York and bought the 150 acre farm so he could use it as a weekend retreat. A great flood hit the region in 1913, in the Miami Valley, and almost destroyed Dayton, leaving a noticeable mark on John's farm. The entire populace decided that they didn't want a flood like that to ever happen again, so they started to finance a flood control project, and John would agree to sell off part of his property to the Miami Conservancy District for the construction of the Englewood dam; and one of the five biggest dams designed by Arthur Morgan to prevent any more flooding in the Miami Valley. John was happy to help in the finance of the project since his farmland would depend on the completion of this significant dam. In 1922, Marie Sturwold and John would meet as passengers on a trip to Alaska, and after going back and forth to Cincinnati to visit Marie, they would be married and she moved onto the farm that she would learn to love as well. After John passed away in 1955, Marie would then donate the property to the National Audubon Society in 1956 and opened as the Aull Audubon Center in 1957. It offers environmental educational programs that promote the protection and preservation of wildlife, birds and the habitats they need. It showcases exhibits and games about animals, an auditorium for various purposes and a gift shop. There is a marvelous butterfly and hummingbird garden, a woodland garden and a prairie garden with numerous native prairie plants and an 1880s bank barn that has horses, barn cats, goats, hogs, cattle and draft horses.

Trapshooting Hall of Fame & MuseumTrapshooting Hall of Fame & Museum Vandalia, Ohio
Trapshooting began in 1831 when the members of the Sportsmen's Club of Cincinnati started the practice and may have been started in Queen City, after using passenger pigeons in the sport, and often use English sparrows; spreading to other clubs and regions, and in 1840, the New York Gun club would be formed and then the New York Sportsmen's Club came next. A sterling trophy would be given starting in 1836 at the Sportsmen's club of Cincinnati, although today it is in private hands. In 1866, Charles Portlock of Boston would introduce the glass target ball from England and it would begin matches that would continue through the 19th century, with great glass ball shooters being made like Capt. Bogardus, Ira Paine, Annie Oakley and Doc Carver, that would continue to set new records at various matches and expositions. In 1868, Fred Kimble from Knoxville, Illinois would introduce the choke bore shotgun and then in 1880, he would invent the clay target, and a trap to throw it. However, another man by the name of George Ligowsky of Cincinnati would introduce the clay target to a group of shooters at Coney Island the same year, and he would get credit for the invention; becoming an instant success. He would then contract Doc Carver and Capt. Adam Bogardus to tour around the nation in a number of matches that used the Ligowsky targets. Doc Carver had earned a great reputation for a rifle shooter, but he would win 22 of the 25 matches he had with Bogardus. Ligowsky would then stage the first national trapshoot in New Orleans in 1885 that brought all the great shooters in the country, that would also include Rolla Heikes and J. A. R. Elliot, with Doc Carver winning the tournament. The history of this great sport would continue on for many years and today is still a favorite among many, but the best way to learn more about this unique sport is to visit the museum and find out all the authentic info and enjoy perusing many of the weapons used over the years.

This is a historic building in Dayton, Ohio that was designed by Peters, Burns & Pretzinger and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, after being constructed in 1901. It would become the last horse-drawn firehouse in the city, in 1917 and then rejuvenated in 1988. One of the firehouse's finest was Anthony Lorenz that would become part of the fire crew here that would begin keeping a journal about fires, training, and other aspects of a firefighter's life. His career would be ended in 1943 after getting serious injuries from a fire that left him with difficult health problems, but wouldn't stop him from writing in his leather bound journal that contains a wealth of information, facts and figures about who left and why and other great information. The journal has many items about fire fighting procedures and the safety training that the men would get, although, even under the best of circumstances you are dealing with an uncontrollable force that does whatever it wants, when it wants, and the most you can do is survive and make sure everyone else does as well. Tony worked at Firehouse No. 14 for most of his career, and remembers many firefighters that came and went, for various reasons and it is all written down for visitors to learn more about.

    Wright FieldWright Field Dayton, Ohio
Wilbur Wright Field or Wright Field as it is more commonly called, had been an airfield for the US Air Force near Riverside, Ohio and is now part of the bigger Wright-Patterson Air Force Base complex and the home of the National Museum of the United States Air Force. It opened in 1917 as the Wilbur Wright Field that would train pilots and gunners for WWI and then would be followed by the installation of the adjacent Fairfield Air Depot that is now called Fairborn, Ohio. After McCook Field test facility closed in 1924, the Dayton council bought the 4500 acres that included the leased area where the Wilbur Wright field was located and then named it for both the Wright brothers. After it was added to the nearby Patterson Field, it would become known as Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, although its operations would close down in 1963, but would open just enough for landings on the aircraft that would become part of the National Museum of the United States Air Force. This triangular field is the home of the museum and the adjacent field is still called Wright Field, and would become the center of the Air Corps, Army Air Forces and then the Air Force research and development and flight testing. The two fields were joined in 1948 to become Wright-Patterson, with the Wright Field being made Area B of the complex.
