The Eastern Market
Traveling down to Detroit "the narrow", Antoine de la Mathe Cadillac establised
a fur trading post at Fort Ponchartrain. An unfortunate fire torches Detroit in
1805 and it is rebuilt by 1843 constructing the first vegetable market shed
behind Old City Hall. Later a more permanent structure is built after it is
blown down in 1890. Developement continues in 1921 and an incinerator,
garage, public horse barn, and shops are added at Adelaide and Market
Streets. Adding to the continuous expansion, sheds 4 & 5 are constructed on
the House of Corrections site. During the closure of the Western Market, shed 6
was contructed to house displaced farmers. By 1977, the Eastern Market is
declared an historic area after 140 years of business. Today Eastern Market
promotes the economic vitality and advancement of farm fresh fruits and
vegetables at great prices.
