Harold Washington Library Center
The Harold Washington Library
Center is the main library for the Chicago Public Library system,
named after former mayor Harold Washington, and located on State
Street. All the libraries in the system offer wifi connections, and
it is full service, filling the huge 756,640 square foot building
that opened in 1991. Its base is constructed with huge granite
blocks, with red bricks finishing the majority of the remainder of
the building, making it look like it is Beaux-Art architecture. The
roof area and the west side are made up of aluminum, steel and
glass. Inside, all the doors go into the lobby, where you can go to
the other levels. In the lower level, the Cindy Pritzker auditorium,
exhibit hall and multi-purpose room are located, with the center
lobby being two stories high and on the east is the popular library,
the second floor contains the Thomas Hughes Children's library, the
third is where the entry ways are located with circulation desk, pcs
for use by the public, general info services, periodicals and
interlibrary loan department, on the fourth floor the technology
pieces, business and general sciences.
