When on vacation I try to find things that we can’t do at home. I don’t want to go to the same fast food or chain restaurant that is around the corner back home. I try to look for great unique things to do. A lot of the time I find museums are the best way to do that. They often times focus on the area around them and try to preserve the history. They can be small or large, beautiful or even require a acquired taste. While traveling around the Elkhart area we ran across the Ruthmere Museum. This Estate is an absolute delight. It has lots of rich history but the real treasure is the art and beautiful wood. The house was built in 1908 that makes the house 104 years old this year. I have never seen anything or anyone that looks this good at that great age. The estate was built with the purpose of entertaining in mind. It has many rooms all lined with art and beautiful dark wood walls. No expense was wasted in the creation or design of the house, and no corners were skipped during its preservation. The estate ground is open to the public year round where are just as beautiful as the inside. The house is open for guided tours from April to December 1st. Admission to this wonderful estate is just 10 bucks for adults or 4 for students.

When in Elkhart if you ask a local where to get some good eats they will surly point you straight to The Chubby Trout. This little local gem is almost always packed even during the weekdays. That could be from there many specials such as half priced Sushi on Mondays. It’s a great special and draws a large crowd every week. There is a few catches that can be off putting at first but don’t worry it’s a just place to eat. The special is only valid for 2 Sushi each and it has to be dine in. That isn’t a big deal because the rolls are always large and filling. When they grab an appetizer you are sure to be filled up. Chubby Trout only serves and uses the freshest ingredients. They obtain as many ingredients as they can from local farmer markets. The fish is fresh daily and never frozen. Much of the fish is caught locally in lake Michigan. Service at Chubby’s is usually great however during that really busy nights there can be waits on tables and food can take a few minutes extra to get to the tables. Just sit back relax and enjoy some great local drinks. The Bartenders are quick and pour great mixed drinks they know how to take care of their bar and the guest siting around the restaurant. It’s a full bar so ask for anything and they will surly know how to make it.
