While visiting Germantown you will be right outside of Memphis Tennessee. Between these two city’s’ is the L!chterman Nature Center. This Nature Center has many special exhibits and activities to offer its visitors. The Nature Center employees a certified arboretum, for those of you like me who didn’t know what that is, it is a person or cares for plants and has extensive knowledge of them. Suzy Askew is the arboretum and a large part of the L!chterman Nature Center. Askew has only been at the Center for a little over a year but has made it into a special place in that time. Over the year the number of volunteers has increased 3 fold and that results in a better Nature Center, in fact it has been rated the best in the area. While you are visiting you should plan to be there at noon because you can see the other animal keepers feed them at noon Tuesday through Friday. The animals include Box Turtles, a Red Tailed Hawk, and an assortment of snakes. Admission to the L!chterman Nature Center is only $6 for adults, $5.50 for seniors, and $4.50 for kids. Visitors are welcome during the hours of 10am – 3pm Tuesday through Saturday. The Lichterman Nature Center is a great place to bring your family any day of the week. It has many great things to see and do during your visit.

Just a short 15 minute drive from Germantown will land you on the outskirts of Memphis where you can find The Art museum at the University of Memphis. This museum is well you guessed it a part of the university of Memphis and because of that dominated by student artwork. Don’t worry; students have some of the best artwork out there. University students are the young and brightest students that the current generation has to offer. Students offer a creative and new perspective that many others miss and can’t find. Student work is one of a kind and because of that creates a rich cultural diversity that creates an amazing museum. Although the museum focuses on exhibition art that comes and goes they do have a permanent collection as well. over 120 pieces of African art create one of their permanent exhibits and was all donated to the University of Memphis. The second permanent exhibit is on the Ancient Egyptians. The Museum has over 1100 ancient Egyptian antiquities however only a 200 of them are on permanent display. The museum is open 9 am to 5 pm Monday through Saturday and only closed for holidays and when changing the temporary exhibits. Admission is very cheap because it is free and open to the public. Tours can be requested and lead by graduate students from The University of Memphis.
