While you are in Virginia you will not be able to help but notice the multitude of military bases. While you are in town the one that we suggest you check out in Fort Monroe. Fort Monroe is the largest stone fort built in the country and its main objective has always been to protect American form attacks from the sea. Within the fort you can find the Casemate Museum which was opened in 1834 and displays some on the more historical moments that Fort Monroe has played an active part in. The museum shows you the history of the fort and shows Robert E. Lee’s living quarters and the uniforms and supplies that could be found here when the fort was in its prime. There are newspaper clippings, artist’s drawings, clothing and uniforms worn by the military, medical instruments, weapons, and displays showing how the rooms were once used. Two of the displays on show in the museum are the holding Major General Jefferson Davis in a jail cell and Benjamin Butler’s decision to allow escaped slaves to say at the fort. One really cool thing about this fort is that one of the few remaining forts with a moat that is still on display. Hampton awaits you come and enjoy it!
