The sugar museum is located next to the state of Hawaii's biggest working sugar factory, in the fabulous historic plantation town of Puunene, Maui as a marvelous repository of information and displays about one of the most important and influential eras of the island's history, and is now dedicated to preserving and showcasing the heritage and history of Maui's sugar business, in the 1800 square foot museum. There is the field work room, and the mill room with their relics and documents, and the fabulous outdoor displays where you can get up close and personal with all the equipment and objects needed and used by the plantations, that include a cane grab, a Cleveland model J36 trench digger, a bull gear eleven feet in diameter, vintage Caterpillar tractors, an outdoor Portuguese oven constructed in the 1920s and a cane hauler. However, their most treasured relic is a historic steam locomotive called, "Claus Spreckels", which would serve the Kahului Railroad company for 47 years from 1882 to 1929, hauling sugar, passengers and various cargo.
