  The Bush House in Salem, Oregon is a wonderful Victorian house that was constructed by Asahel Bush II in 1877 and 1878; and enjoyed by his families for the next 75 years. Asahel was one of the first important people in the settling of Oregon, starting the Oregon Statesman newspaper and then afterwards, the Ladd and Bush Bank; both still in operation in Salem. He became a rich man during his life, and it would become the biggest estate to come under the provision of the tax law up to that period. The house was a marvelous dwelling for him, and it is now an excellent memorial to him, since he had poured so much into it. It was constructed of a Victorian Italianate style of architecture, sitting in the center of a fantastic estate. It would become the hub of a vast farm compound that included many acres of grazing for cattle, a lovely greenhouse and huge barn. Asahel was a self-sufficient kind of man and his home and encompassing property would showcase his need for independence and attention to detail.
