Washington County Museum
The Washington County Museum is
a history museum in the unincorporated area of Washington County,
Oregon at the Portland Community College's Rock Creek Campus and
opened in 1975, managed by the Washington County Historical Society.
Their main mission is to preserve the history of the region, and one
of the most interesting displays is the original Washington County
Jail that was constructed in 1853. Local historian Albert E. Tozier
donated his marvelous collection of maps, books, artifacts and other
relics to the county historical society in the 1930s. The Washington
County Historical Society was created in 1956 and in 1975, they
wanted to begin a history museum. From 1975 to 1987, the county
owned and managed the museum, which was located in downtown
Hillsboro, Oregon inside the Heidel House and in 1982, they
constructed a new museum building at the Rock Creek campus that
opened in January 1983. In September of 1987, the society took over
management of the museum and in 2007, started a $1.7 million
enlargement that would double the size of the space, with the Oregon
State Beavers basketball coach, Craig Robinson being the master of
ceremonies, and getting $90,000 for the museum.
