Is
America's first Museum established in 1773, the Charleston Museum
offers exhibits the whole family will enjoy. If this is your
first trip to Charleston, you will enjoy visiting the Charleston
Museum. Several of the exhibits explain the history of
Charleston and the South Carolina Low country giving its visitors a
better understanding of all the rich history in Charleston.
The Museum's collection has artifacts from early settlement through
the late 19th century highlights of the collection include: slave
tags, unique artifacts from the rice and cotton eras, early trade
ware and much more. A separate gallery features a beautiful
silver collection including the christening cup of George
Washington. The Early Days Exhibit- displays rare object such
as: an Egyptian mummy, plaster cast of Pharaoh Rameses II which was
acquired from the British Museum in the 1890's and jarred specimens
preserved in rum. The Charleston Museum offers Kidstory
Exhibit- for our younger visitors offering several hands-on, fun
exhibits teaching children of all ages the cultural and natural
history of Charleston.
