Sitting in downtown St. Petersburg, Florida is the world's biggest collection of Salvador Dali, outside of Europe. Back in 1942, A. Reynolds Morse and Eleanor R. Morse would go to a Dali retrospective at the Cleveland Museum of Art and become quite intrigued by the artist's unique style and subject matter; impressed by his work, they would buy their first Dali a year later. That initial purchase would become the start of a 40 year relationship as patrons and friends of Dali that would end in the huge expansive collection of original Dali works. The couple would showcase their magnificent collection until 1971 in their home in Cleveland, although by 1965, when they loaned out more than 200 works of Dali, that they had quite a mini-retrospective that really needed a permanent home. In 1971, the couple, with Dali overseeing the whole event, they would open a museum next to their office building in Beachwood, Ohio, and by the end of that decade, after having many visitors and appreciative patrons, they decided to move their massive collection once more. After conducting a search that would draw national attention, the Morse couple would find a marine warehouse in downtown St. Petersburg, Florida that would need rejuvenation and the museum would open in 1982. By 2008, the old museum would be replaced with a new location, designed by the architectural firm HOK, and constructed on the downtown waterfront adjacent to the Mahaffey Theater, that featured a huge glass entrance and skylight. The new museum would open on 1-11-11, at 11:11 AM. The collection has 96 oil paintings, 1300 graphics, photographs, more than 100 watercolors and drawings with numerous objets d'art and sculptures, a large and expansive library and their exhibits are regularly rotated. Besides the Dali Theater-Museum in Figueres, Spain this houses one of the world's biggest collections of Dali's works.
