It was started in 1857 as the Museum of Natural History and Fine Arts, at the Toronto Normal School, with today's conception starting in 1912 with the enactment of the Royal Ontario Museum Act. It was owned by the University of Toronto until 1968, when it became an independent facility although it still has close relations with the university, occasionally sharing resources and experience.
