Tulsa Garden Center
The Tulsa Garden Center is found
inside Woodward Park, part of Tulsa, Oklahoma, containing beautiful
gardens and the Tulsa Garden Center mansion that was constructed in
1919 and has many wonderful amenities like marble and hardwood
floors, intricate ceilings, elegant chandeliers, 21 rooms and 10
bathrooms. The entire complex is called the Woodward Park complex,
that had been part of a 160 acre plot of land that belonged to a
Creek Indian named Helen Woodward Slemp, after whom the park was
named. The Italianate villa was designed by well known local
architect, Nobel B. Flemming, with construction beginning in 1919
and finishing in 1921, costing more than $100,000; becoming one of
the most luxurious houses in the city, sitting on 13 landscaped
acres. The house was constructed by David R. Travis, a Russian
immigrant that moved here with his family in 1913, coming here from
Ohio, after having succeeded in the scrapmetal business. Once here,
Travis would go on to become very rich in the oil field equipment
salvage business. The early estate, included the mansion, swimming
pool, two greenhouses, two barns, two five room cottages and a
solarium. The swimming pool was taken out years ago to make room for
the arboretum parking lot.
