While in Wayne stop by and get in touch with some local history and flair. The city of Wayne owns and operates three different home museums from the town and while you are in town you should stop in and see some of these historic home museums. It wasn’t over night that these homes where ready for you to stop in. First these homes had to be bought which took time money and a lot of fundraising on behalf of the towns people. Then the homes had to be refurbished and brought back to their former glory. Then artifacts had to be gathered and placed into the home and they were placed the way that they should have been. The Van Riper-Hopper Historic House Museum was built in 1786 by Van Riper as a present for his lovely bride. The Dutch Colonial home cost him a pretty penny because this home was a rarity at the time. The farmstead includes an historical herb garden, Archeology Laboratory, and Albert Payson Terhune Collection. As you walk through this home the different rooms will show you the furniture that was represented through the ages so it is like you watch this house grow with modernity over time. The Mead-Van Duyne Historic House Museum is on the same property as the Van Riper home were you can see the home that was here before the war. The Schuyler-Colfax Home was built by 1695 and is Wayne’s oldest home. This is also one of the oldest homes on the east coast that never left family hands. This home has went through 8 generations and each generation whether it was military medical, legal, or government left behind something interesting to see.
