Atlanta is the capital and the largest city in Georgia. It is also one of the fastest growing sities in the world. One thing Atlanta is known for is their sports team, the Atlanta Braves. The Atlanta Braves won the World Series in 1995 and they had a run of 14 straight divisional championships from 1991-2005.  They began playing in 1871 but their name at the time was the Boston Red Stockings. They are the oldest continuing playing professional baseball team of the Major League Baseball. A famous landmark for Atlanta is The Varsity, it has been Atlanta's Landmark for over 75 years now. The Varsity is a drive-in restaurant chain and is one of the largest drive-in fast food restaurants in the world.

Atlanta's Attractions

One of the most popular attractions here in Atlanta is the Georgia Aquarium. It is the largest Aquarium in the world. The Georgia Aquarium opened to the public on November 23, 2005. It hasThe Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta more than 100,000 animals of 500 different types of animals. This aquarium is mostly funded by a 250 million dollar donation from Home Depot. The most popular species the aquarium had  were four young whale sharks named Ralph, Norton, Alice, and Trixie. Ralph died on January 11, 2007 and Norton became ill and they had to euthanize him on June 13, 2007. The aquarium has a Great Hammerhead shark and five 11 foot long beluga whales. The aquarium has five different exhibits, Georgia Explorer, Tropical Diver, Ocean Voyager, Cold-Water Quest, and River Scout.

Atlanta also has the World of Coca-Cola which is a museum on the history of The Coca-Cola The World of Coca-Cola in AtlantaCompany. This exhibit opened on May 24, 2007, it replaced a smaller museum that was located a few miles away. Entering the Museum there are metal detectors like in an airport. Once you get through those you will enter "The Lobby" which has large Coca-Cola bottles made from all different materials from all around the world. Then comes the "Coca-Cola Loft" which is a large collection of advertising objects for Coca-Cola starting from 1905. Next is the "Happiness Factory" which shows a documentary of the Happiness Factory. The next exhibit is "The Hub" which is the department from the old museum. There are many different other attractions also in the museum you can explore as well.

 

Atlanta's Parks, Gardens, and More

Piedmont Park is a 189 acres of land and is known as the "Central Park" of Atlanta. The park was first opened in 1895. The park is most popular for Grilling, Swimming, fishing, playing and more. The park also has been popular for an athletic center for the city. In 2008 the park made an extension and a complete renovation of the bathhouse and swimming pool. The renovation part is expected to be finished in 2009, but the expansion will take much longer.  Atlanta also has the Atlanta Botanical Garden which sits on 30 acres of land and was firs incorporated in 1976. The Gardens mission is "develop and maintain plant collections for the purpose of display, education, conservation, research, and enjoyment." There are some different exhibits such as the Japanese Garden and the Rose Garden. You can also visit the Zoo Atlanta which was discovered in 1889. This zoo has around one million visitors annually and has almost 1,000 animals of 250 different species from all around the world. One of the exhibits in the zoo is the Ford African Rain Forest habitat which was 4.5 million dollars to fund.  One of their most popular and important animals is the Sumatran Tiger. There is a petting zoo and plenty of exhibits to explore.

Atlanta's Historic Sites

The Atlanta History Center is located in Buckhead and is one of America's Premier history museums. It was discovered in 1926 and currently has 12 different exhibits. This historic site also has historic houses and gardens such as the Swan House and Tullie Smith Farm. One of the largest collections of civil war artifacts in the world are located in this museum. Some of the exhibits are the Centennial Olympic Museum, The Turning Point: The American Civil War, the Down the Fairway with Bobby Jones, and the Shaping Traditions: Folk Arts in a Changing South and more. Another historic site in Atlanta is the  Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site which was founded on October 10, 1980. This historic site teaches you about the boyhood of Martin Luther King Jr. and his home life on Auburn Avenue. Ebenezer Baptist Church is also part of the historic site.  Atlanta also has the Margaret Mitchell House and Museum which was the home of Margaret Mitchell who was an author. This museum first opened in the year 1997. The museum is about the Pulitzer prize-winning novel, Gone with the Wind and the filming of the 1939 film which was based on the book.
