Atlanta's Parks, Gardens, and MorePiedmont Park is a 189 acres of land and is known as the "Central Park" of Atlanta. The park was first opened in 1895. The park is most popular for Grilling, Swimming, fishing, playing and more. The park also has been popular for an athletic center for the city. In 2008 the park made an extension and a complete renovation of the bathhouse and swimming pool. The renovation part is expected to be finished in 2009, but the expansion will take much longer. Atlanta also has the Atlanta Botanical Garden which sits on 30 acres of land and was firs incorporated in 1976. The Gardens mission is "develop and maintain plant collections for the purpose of display, education, conservation, research, and enjoyment." There are some different exhibits such as the Japanese Garden and the Rose Garden. You can also visit the Zoo Atlanta which was discovered in 1889. This zoo has around one million visitors annually and has almost 1,000 animals of 250 different species from all around the world. One of the exhibits in the zoo is the Ford African Rain Forest habitat which was 4.5 million dollars to fund. One of their most popular and important animals is the Sumatran Tiger. There is a petting zoo and plenty of exhibits to explore.

Atlanta's Historic SitesThe Atlanta History Center is located in Buckhead and is one of America's Premier history museums. It was discovered in 1926 and currently has 12 different exhibits. This historic site also has historic houses and gardens such as the Swan House and Tullie Smith Farm. One of the largest collections of civil war artifacts in the world are located in this museum. Some of the exhibits are the Centennial Olympic Museum, The Turning Point: The American Civil War, the Down the Fairway with Bobby Jones, and the Shaping Traditions: Folk Arts in a Changing South and more. Another historic site in Atlanta is the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site which was founded on October 10, 1980. This historic site teaches you about the boyhood of Martin Luther King Jr. and his home life on Auburn Avenue. Ebenezer Baptist Church is also part of the historic site. Atlanta also has the Margaret Mitchell House and Museum which was the home of Margaret Mitchell who was an author. This museum first opened in the year 1997. The museum is about the Pulitzer prize-winning novel, Gone with the Wind and the filming of the 1939 film which was based on the book.
