Newark is the largest city in New Jersey with a total population of 273,546.  It was first founded in the year 1666. The city's popular area is Downtown. In Downtown you can find the New Jersey Performing Arts Center which opened in 1997. Newark also has the Riverfront Stadium which is their baseball stadium for the Newark Bears. The city's two nicknames are Gateway City and Renaissance City. Newark has museums, historic sites and many other places to visit and things to see. Newark's Museums

The Newark Museum is the largest museum in New Jersey. It is a museum of American Art,The Newark Museum in Newark decorative arts, and arts of Asia, Africa, the Americas, and the ancient world. Some of the artists are Hiram Powers, Thomas Cole, Mary Cassatt, Edward Hopper, and many more. The museum was first thought of in 1909 by John Cotton Dana.  This museum was originally on the fourth floor of the Newark Public Library. It moved into its own building in the 1920's. This museum also has a mini-zoo with over 100 live animals as well as the Dreyfuss Planetarium and the Victoria Hall of Science.

The New Jersey Historical Society/Museum in NewarkThe New Jersey Historical Society was organized in 1845 by business leaders of New Jersey. The Society was first located on Market Street in Downtown but it left downtown in 1931 to move to a larger building. It then moved back to downtown, to 52 Park Place, which is on Military Park. Just in the first year of moving back to downtown, the attendance increased almost five times as more. In this Society/Museum is two floors full of exhibition space, a gift shop, and a hall for lectures. The third floor is an exhibition on New Jersey's natural resources. The second floor is all rotating exhibits.

 

Places To Go in Newark

Newark has many places to visit while vacationing in the city. Some of the popular places are the African Globe Theatre Works. Its an independent theatre company and every year it presents productions by and about people of the African descent. There is also Aljira: A Center For Contemporary Art which is a non-profit organization. This gallery offers monthly exhibitions and auctions. These galleries include paintings and sculptures by local artists. Then there is The Art Gallery which was organized in 1961. It has art such as graphics, paintings, and some sculpture by regional and world-class artists. There is also the Newark Symphony Hall that was built in 1925. It is one of New Jersey's major cultural centers. Plus there are many more places to visit in Newark.

Newark Parks

Newark has quite a few parks to enjoy while visiting. It comes out to be about 153 acres of land for parks and median landscaping which comes to 13 different parks and sport play facilities. The Birch Grove Park is about 15 acres and it includes a play place for toddlers and older children. This park also includes a water element, a fenced softball playing field, a basketball court, lighted tennis courts, and family/group picnic facilities as well as restrooms. Then is Bridgepoint Park which is about 4 acres and only includes a play structure for the kids and family picnic facilities. There no restrooms at this park. The Community Center Park is about 16acres which includes a play structure, basketball and handball courts, lighted tennis courts, and picnic area as well as restrooms. The Jerry Raber Ash Street Park is about 6 acres but has play structures, softball practice area, a basketball court, picnic area, and a horseshoe pit. This park is also the host of the operated Viola Blythe Community Center and a Head Start Preschool facility.  Any park you visit in Newark has a lot of fun things to do for young children and adults.
