Portland was first organized in the year 1851 and it is located on the Northwestern side of the United States. Portland is known as "The City of Roses" due to the city being ideal for growing roses.  Portland lies on  the top of a volcanic field called the Boring Lava Field. The Boring Lava Field has about 32 cinder cones. Mount Hood is a dormant volcano but is also potentially active and most people can see it in clear weather.  You can also see Mount Saint Helens from high elevation locations. Mount Saint Helens is located to the north in Washington. This volcano is so close that after an eruption Portland is dusted with the ashes from the volcano.  Portland is mostly known for their parks and gardens. This city is very proud of their parks and all its preserving open space.

Mount Tabor Park was first discovered in the year 1909 by the Olmsted Brothers. This park isMount Tabor Park in Portland known for its reservoirs, three of which were accepted to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. The reservoirs were built in span from 1894 to 1911 along with the reservoirs in Washington Park.  Most of the reservoirs and their gatehouses are made from extensive stonework and wrought-iron.  Initially there were four reservoirs above ground but the one numbered as 2 was on property that was sold to a private developer.

Forest Park in PortlandForest Park is located in the Tualatin Mountains and is a public park. This park is west of downtown Portland and it is the largest urban forest in the United States. It is more than 5,100 acres of land and has more than 70 miles of public trails. This park stretches over 8 miles over hillsides and over looks the Willamette River. There have been more than 112 bird species and over 62 mammal species found in this park. There is 143 acres that is a sanctuary from the Audubon Society of Portland.

Mill Ends Park is the world's smallest park according to the Guinness Book of Records. This wasMill Ends Park in Portland first established in the year 1971. This park is a circle of only 2 feet in the median of a traffic intersection. It was named after Dick Fagan's column in the Oregon Journal, in which Dick Fagan was a columnist for.  This small circle called a park has featured many things such as a swimming pool with a diving board for butterflies, a horseshoe, and even a miniature Ferris Wheel. 

 

International Rose Test Garden

This garden is a rose garden with over 7,000 rose plants of about 550 different kinds. These roses bloom from April through October depending on the weather. They are sent to the garden from all over the world. Here they are tested for color, fragrance, disease resistance and other characteristics. This park is the oldest park to still be operating as a test garden and to the public in the United States. The park also has an amphitheater which hosts many events throughout the year. It has a part of the garden called The Shakespeare Garden which has a formal walkway, a raised sitting area, and a small flawless tended flora. The different roses are named after the characters in Shakespeare's play.  Then it also has a Gold Medal Garden which is also a formal garden with walkways and award winning roses along with a central fountain and a gazebo.  Its also popular for people to have their weddings in this garden.

Portland Attractions

There are plenty of fun things to do in Portland. One of them is visiting the Oregon Zoo. The Oregon Zoo has all kinds of species from all over the world such as Asian elephants, Peruvian penguins, and Arctic polar bears. It also has an African Rainforest and shows the majestic Great Northwest exhibits. This zoo is also used for wildlife preservation and field research.  There is also the Oaks Amusement Park if you want to ride some thrilling rides and have a great time. This park is celebrating their 103rd year of continuous operation. They first opened their gates on May 30, 1905 and its still operating until this day. It is surrounded by oak trees which is where the park got its name. Not only do they have rides but they also have roller skating and picnics to enjoy as well. Another popular part of Oregon's attractions is the Laurelhurst Theater.
