San Francisco is the fourth most popular city in California. San Francisco is famous for a few different landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, the cable cars, Coit Tower, and Chinatown. California was declared as part of the United States on July 7, 1846 which was during the Mexican-American War. California has some really great beaches and parks such as Ocean beach which runs along the Pacific Ocean shoreline.  The largest and well-known park in California is the Golden Gate Park. It stretches from the center of the city all the way west to the Pacific Ocean.  Many things happen in San Francisco such as movies are filmed there and celebrities live there. This city is very highly maintained.

Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge connects San Francisco to Marin County. It stretches across the Pacific Ocean known as a suspension bridge. In the year 1937 this bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world. Now it is the second longest bridge in the United States. Before this bridge was built the only way to get across was by a Ferry. The Ferry services started in the year 1820 and it eventually became the Golden Gate Ferry Company. When the bridge was complete the city had a celebration which began on May 27, 1937. This celebration lasted for one week and the day before the bridge opened for vehicles, 200,000 people walked across by foot or by roller skates.

San Francisco's Beaches and Parks

The Golden Gate Park is one of the most popular parks in California. It is a large urban park sittingThe Golden Gate Park in San Francisco on 1017 acres of land. It is in the shape of a rectangle, similar to Central Park in New York but its 174 acres larger. This park is the third most visited park in the United States and has about 13 million visitors a year. In the year 1903 they put Dutch style windmills at the western end of the park which pumped the water throughout the park. This park holds an annual even called the "Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival." It is a free event that they hold in October.

The Japanese Tea Garden in San FranciscoThe Japanese Tea Garden is located in the Golden Gate Park but is a very popular part of the park. It was originally built as part as a World's Fair called the California Mildwinter International Exposition of 1894. This garden is the oldest public Japanese garden in the United States and it holds paths, pond, and a teahouse which has native Japanese and Chinese plants. The garden also has sculptures and bridges hidden throughout the five acres of garden.

Barker Beach is a public beach on the Pacific Ocean coast. It is about a half mile long and it startsBarker Beach in San Francisco at the south end of the Golden Gate Point going to the Seacliff peninsula and the Palace of the Legion of Honor. This beach is also a part of the Presidio which used to be a military base. From this beach you can see the Golden Gate Bridge. This beach is also the site of one of the existing colonies where Hesperolinon congestum can be found.

 

 

San Francisco's Museums and Sports

San Francisco has many museums to visit such as the Museum of Modern Art. This museums holds 20th century and contemporary pieces of art. It has over 600,000 visitors a year. In the year 1995 this museum moved to a new building in the South of Market neighborhood and has been doing great since.  They also have the Palace of the Legion of Honor which has classic European works of art and the De Young Museum and Asian Art Museum has anthropological and non European pieces. As for sports San Francisco is the home of the San Francisco Giants which they play in the AT&T Park which opened in year 2000. San Francisco is also home of the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers started playing in the year 1946 and made it to the NFL in 1950. They have also won five Super Bowl titles with Bill Walsh as their coach.
