Tampa is located in the county of Hillsborough which is on the west side of Florida.  Tampa means "sticks of fire" in the language Calusa which is a Native American tribe that lived south of Tampa Bay. Tampa ranked as one of the cleanest cities in America in the year 2008. Tampa also leads as one of world's top phosphate exporters. Tampa became a huge cigar production center around the year 1885 by Vecente Martinez Ybor. Therefore that is where Ybor City came from. Ybor started building houses around his factory and it expanded from there. Tampa has over 165 parks and beaches so there is always something to do while visiting the city.

Tampa's Attractions

One of the most popular them parks in Tampa is called Busch Gardens Africa. It is an AfricanBusch Gardens Africa in Tampa themed park which opened on March 31,1959. When it first opened it was a free-admission hospitality facility for Anheuser-Busch brewery. Visitors could watch animals do an act and then walk through a beer garden where you could try Busch beer. Now Busch Gardens is known for their thrill rides such as rollercoasters. This theme-park is no longer free due to they have to compete with other theme parks in Florida. This park claims to be one of the largest adventure parks in the United States.

The Florida Aqaurium in TampaThe Florida Aquarium is about 250,000 square feet. It is a non profited organization and is publicly operated. This aquarium holds over 20,000 aquatic animals and pants from all over the world. This aquarium opened in March of 1995 but only as a privately funded company. It became publicly funded in 1999. Some of the exhibitions that are included in this aquarium are a large simulated swamp/river area which is covered with a tall grass atrium, a simulated beach, and a coral reef community which is in a 500,000 gallon tank. Their mission statement is to "entertain, education and inspire stewardship of the natural environment."

Tampa also has the Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo which is a 56 acre zoo. It is known as one of the bestTampa's Lowry Park Zoo mid-size zoos in the United States. This zoo is strictly a non profit society and is a charitabe organization. They now have over 200 employees and was voted the number one family friendly zoo in the United States. The zoo does have a few rides such as a water flume ride and a small rollercoaster.

 

 

Tampa Events and Festivals

Tampa holds a lot of events and festivals in the area. Some of them are the Gasparilla Pirate Festival, most people just call it Gasparilla. This festival started in the year 1904 and has been going on every year since then. A lot of people call Gasparilla the Mardi Gras of Tampa. It is usually held on the last Saturday of January and has over 400,000 visitors. Tampa also has the Sant'Yago Knight Parade which is something that is held usually about one week to a few weeks after the Gasparilla. Then Tampa holds the Florida State Fair which is in mid February. This fair also brings about 400,000 people as well as the Guavaween which is an open street party for Halloween. These festivities take place in Ybor City. Another big event Tampa has is the Outback Bowl which is an even held on New Year's Day at the Raymond James Stadium.

Ybor City

Ybor City is one of the most popular cities around. It is a historic neighborhood which is located northeast of downtown. It was discovered around the 1880's by cigar manufacturers.  In the cigar facilities the workers would roll over a million cigars a year. The main street in Ybor city, 7th Avenue is known as one of the ten great streets in America. There are many places to visit while in Ybor City. Starting in the 1980's Ybor City became filled with bars, restaurants, nightclubs, and other nightlife attractions. In the year 2000, Ybor City added a shopping complex and movie theater and called it Ybor Centro. They wanted it to be more family friendly. They also added apartments, condominiums, and a hotel.
