Washington DC was first known as the District of Columbia and was also commonly called just simply DC. This city was also known as the capital of the United States. It was discovered on July 16, 1790. This city borders the states of Virginia and Maryland. The White House is located in the city of Washington and was voted second on the AIA's "List of America's Favorite Architecture" in the year 2007. The John A. Wilson Building is where the mayor and the council of the District of Columbia's offices are. Another thing Washington DC is known for is Georgetown University, this university is very popular. One of the popular sports centers in Washington DC is the Verizon Center which is home of the Washington Capitals, Washington Mystics, and Washington Wizards.

This cemetery is where soldiers were buried during the American Civil War. There are more than 290,000 people buried in this cemetery which is 624 acres of land. It has veterans from the American Revolution to the military actions in Afghanistan and Iraq buried there. At the top of the hill at the Arlington National Cemetery is the "Tomb of the Unknown Soldier". That is where they burry the unknown soldiers who died in combat. It is now known as the "Tomb of the Unknowns". This also includes the Arlington Memorial Amphitheater where memorial services and state funeral services are held as well as Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies. This building was completed in the year 1921. You will know if there are funerals in process if the flags at Arlington are flown at half staff. They fly them half staff half an hour before the funeral and half and hour after the funeral.

The Smithsonian Art Museum is mostly about American art. It first
opened to the public in 1968
from its current location. It was first on display at the National
Mall in 1829 but had to be moved to a bigger building for all its
fine art. The renovations for the new building were complete in July
of 2006. This museum also has a new central courtyard that has a
curved glass canopy which opened on November 18, 2007.
Another popular place to be in Washington DC is Chinatown. Chinatown is a
small historic neighborhood close to downtown. They hold an annual
Chinese New Year festival that is very popular. It includes a parade
and the Friendship Arch which is a Chinese gate that goes over H
Street at 7th Street. Chinatown was first populated with Germans but
in the 1930's the Chinese came to the area. It is one of the most
popular tourist sites in Washington DC.
Washington Is mostly known for its monuments. There a lot of monuments to see while your visiting the city of Washington DC. Some of them include the Arlington National Cemetery, Jefferson Memorial, George Mason Memorial, and the Lincoln Memorial. You can also tour the Three Houses of Government which include visiting the White House, the U.S. Capitol, or the U.S. Supreme Court. There is the Kennedy Center which always has shows or concerts playing for your entertainment. This city also has the Great Falls Park which you can take a hike through an 800 acre park which is located right along the Potomac River and discover the wildlife. You can even take a tour through George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens and learn about our first presidents life and even his family.
