    Belfast CastleBelfast Castle Belfast, Ireland
sitting on the slopes of the Cavehill Country Park in Belfast, Northern Ireland, the Belfast Castle rises majestically into the sky, 400 feet above sea level, giving outstanding views of the city and Belfast Lough. The original castle was built in the late 12th century by the Normans, and situated in the midst of the town itself and flanked by modern day High Street, Castle Place and Donegal Place that has grown into Belfast city center. It was the home of Sir Arthur Chichester, the baron of Belfast, and would burn down in 1708. Not caring about rebuilding on the same site or piece of land, the family moved to the suburbs and began construction there. This structure would be constructed from 1862 to 1870 by the 3rd Marquess of Donegall and designed by Charles Lanyon and his son, in the Scottish baronial style. Donegall would pass on before its completion and the family would endure financial problems and sell the house to the 8th Earl of Shaftesbury, who would finish the castle. His son, the 9th earl, would give the castle to the city in 1934, and the city council ordered a major restoration that covered ten years and cost two million pounds. It houses an antique shop, visitor's center and restaurant.
