His will would provide funding for an art museum that would be for the benefit and advancement of humanity, although he wasn't an avid art collector, he did leave significant funds to purchase a large number of works. When Hannah passed on in 1915, a board of trustees would be appointed to carry out his will so that a structure could be built, which opened in 1929, with the first director, Maud Biggs Knowlton, who would be one of the first women in the nation to become a museum administrator. New pavilions would be constructed to house the growing collections, staff and programs in 1982, and the museum would change its name to its current one in 2002. This museum runs tours of a nearby home called the Zimmerman House that is Usonian house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, complete with all of its original furnishings and the owners own outstanding art collection, and is the only Wright designed house in New England that offers tours to the public. The house was designed in 1950, including the furniture, gardens, interiors and even the mailbox; and it would be listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
