Lutheran Evangelical Cathedral and TowerLutheran Evangelical Cathedral Sibiu, Romania
The Lutheran Cathedral of Saint Mary is now the most famous gothic style church in Sibiu, Romania, with a steeple height of more than 225 feet high that is one of the city's best landmarks. This church was constructed in 1520 on the former site of a 12th century Catholic basilica with five outstanding pointed towers that has made it one of the most impressive structures in the city. In 1899, a statue of bishop Georg Daniel Teutsch was installed, while the interior is dominated by a large fresco that is almost 30 feet high, and painted by Johannes of Rosenau in 1445. On its south side, there is a magnificent choir loft with a beautiful fan-vaulted ceiling and a huge baroque organ designed by a German master in 1671. They would install 6000 pipes into the organ in 1914, making it the biggest such type of organ in the nation. It was also used as a burial site for many of the people of Sibiu and in 1853, the gravestones that covered these graves would be taken down from the nave and embedded in the walls of the gallery, giving this church the biggest collection of gravestones in the world.
